Add two more dingers onto Wick's tally
While Rowan Wick isn't focused on beyond the fence when he steps up to the plate, but that is exactly where his shots tend to land about every fifth at-bat.
And for the third time this season, the Cardinals' outfield prospect went deep twice in one game for the short-season Spikes before State College fell to Jamestown, 8-7, in 12 innings Wednesday.
"I'm never looking for a home run, just looking to hit the ball hard," the 21-year-old said.
The 2012 Draft pick went yard in the second and then in the sixth. Wick admitted a little luck was involved in the second long ball.
"I put a big swing on [a fastball] and it went over the right-field fence," he said. "It hit near the high part of the wall, but luckily, it didn't hit that part and it went over."
Hitting .533 with runners on base, Wick plated four runs against Jamestown to tie Vermont's Justin Higley for the New York-Penn League lead with 16 RBIs.
"You can't put pressure on yourself," the left-handed hitter said. "If there is a runner on, you might not get the best pitches, so you have to be patient and just wait for something you can handle."
The Spikes came back from a 7-2 deficit with runs in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth.
Standing on third base with one out in the eighth in a 7-7 game, Wick was told to try and score on Jhohan Acevedo's fly ball to left field, but the Jammers' Jordan Luplow threw Wick out at home.
"We're going to take the chance on a bad throw or tough hop," Wick said. "I'm not necessarily the fastest runner, but we went for it."
Three scoreless frames later, Jamestown took the lead in the 12th on a sacrifice fly by Luplow -- hit to right fielder Wick -- to plate Erik Forgione. And in the home half of the frame, State College went down in order, leaving the power hitter waiting in the on-deck circle.
The British Columbia native set one State College record with his second multi-homer game of the season June 16 and now sits one long ball shy of tying the Spikes' single-season record. David Washington set the mark with 10 dingers last season in the club's eighth year.
"It's process over production for sure. I'm not anywhere near where I need to be to play in the big leagues, but I'm doing well. Hopefully it means I can move up next year or sometime this season," he said. "I'm not trying to break records this season."
Now 13 games into his third season, Wick feels he is ready to advance to Class A.
"I was kind of disappointed at the end of Spring Training when they kept me in extended. I thought I was ready for Peoria, but it is what it is," he said. "State College is an unreal place. It's right on Penn State's campus, the stadium is beautiful [and] the fans are great."
Spikes reliever Josh Lucas (0-1) was charged with the loss after yielding the decisive run on two hits over two innings.
Andy Oamendi, who went two innings for the Jammers, limited the Spikes to one hit to pick up his first win of the season.
