Dust Devils turn triple play in loss
Tri-City's Tyler Gagnon had worked himself into a jam in the fourth inning on Tuesday night. Then his defense got him out of it as quickly as possible.
The Short-Season Dust Devils turned the first triple play at Gesa Stadium in nearly nine years, but it wasn't enough as visiting Boise pulled away for a 14-3 win.
Gagnon dug his own hole leading up to Tuesday night's historic moment. The 25-year-old right-hander walked Mark Zagunis and Danny Canela to set the table for Mark Malave, already a double-play victim to end the first inning.
Malave bounced a grounder to third baseman Shane Hoelscher, who stepped on the bag and fired to Sam Bumpers for the second out. Bumpers relayed to first to nab Malave and complete the around-the-horn feat. First baseman Josh Fuentes saved the back end of the play, leaping to grab Bumpers' high throw and coming down in time for the final out.
The triple play was the first in Gesa Stadium since current Orioles catcher Nick Hundley lined into one for Eugene on August 3, 2005.
Boise got the last laugh, however. The Cubs affiliate snapped a tie with a run in the fifth and another in the sixth before breaking the game open with a seven-run eighth. Canela collected four singles and scored three runs for the Hawks, while Jesse Hodges homered in the eighth and ninth on a career-best six-RBI night.
Boise's 14 runs and 19 hits established Northwest League season highs.
Though the Dust Devils racked up nine hits, just one went for extra bases and they were 3-for-18 with runners in scoring position.
Gagnon (0-3) gave up three runs on four hits and a pair of walks while striking out two in 4 1/3 innings.
Hawks starter Tyler Ihrig (2-0) limited Tri-City to two runs on six hits over six innings. He struck out five batters without issuing a walk.
