Edwar Cabrera promoted to Triple-A

Joseph Ortiz to rehab with RoughRiders

FRISCO, TEXAS (JULY 24, 2014) - The Frisco RoughRiders, Double-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, announced the promotion of left-handed pitcher Edwar Cabrera to Triple-A Round Rock today. Cabrera becomes the 11th RoughRider this season to receive a Triple-A call-up.
 
In the wake of the Cabrera transaction, the RoughRiders receive right-pitcher Jose Monegro from Single-A Hickory. The Texas Rangers also announced left-handed pitcher Joseph Ortiz will begin major league rehab assignment with the 'Riders. 
 
Cabrera, a two-time Texas League Midseason All-Star, reaches the Triple-A level in his first season with the Rangers organization. Texas acquired the 26-year-old off waivers from the Colorado Rockies on October 16, 2013. Cabrera made his major league debut with the Rockies on June 27, 2012 and played in two games at the big league level. The southpaw missed the 2013 campaign following left shoulder surgery. In six career appearances at the Triple-A level, all starts, the southpaw owns a 3-1 record with a 3.41 ERA.
 
The native of Baní, Dominican Republic broke camp with the RoughRiders and made 22 appearances on the hill and 17 in the starter's role. Through 108 1/3 innings this season, Cabrera surrendered 42 runs (36 earned) on 104 hits with 32 walks and 84 strikeouts. The changeup specialist posted a 2.99 ERA and was named the Texas League Pitcher of the Week for June 30-July 6.
 
Monegro, 24, arrives in Frisco for his second stint with the RoughRiders this season. The righty tossed in one game at Dr Pepper Ballpark on April 5 against Northwest Arkansas. He pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed no runs on zero hits with one walk. A native of San Francisco de Macoris, Dominican Republic, Monegro has played for every full-season Rangers affiliate in 2014. Most recently with Single-A Hickory, the 6-foot-3 200-pounder threw 17 2/3 innings out of the bullpen and gave up 12 runs on 20 hits (6.11 ERA) with two walks and 22 strikeouts. Monegro will make his second start of the season tonight and his first since May 9 with Triple-A Round Rock.
 
Ortiz, 23, returns to the north side of the Metroplex, where he pitched for the RoughRiders in 2012, on a major league rehab assignment. In 27 relief outings with Frisco, the lefty registered four saves and held a 2.35 ERA over 30 2/3 innings. He allowed ten runs (eight earned) on 26 hits with 29 strikeouts and six walks. Ortiz made his major league debut on March 31, 2013. In 32 appearances with the Rangers that season the native of Caracas, Venezuela held a 4.23 ERA with 26 runs (21 earned) allowed on 46 hits over 44 2/3 innings. 
 
A motorcycle accident in January left the 5-foot-7 175-pound southpaw with a fractured left foot. He underwent surgery on January 31 and began his rehab assignment in the Arizona Rookie League where he posted two scoreless innings.
 
With the transactions today, Frisco's roster remains at the Texas League limit of 25 active members.
