Cubs Avoid Straight Flush in Reno

Offensive outburst helps Iowa end losing streak
August 24, 2014

Reno, NV - The Iowa Cubs (68-68) snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 10-7 win in the final game of a four-game series against the Reno Aces (73-62) at Aces Ballpark on Saturday night. OF Jorge Soler had a career-high five hits to lead the Cubs' 15-hit attack on offense. Both Omaha and Oklahoma City also won on Saturday, so the Cubs remain four games behind the Storm Chasers for first place and two games behind the RedHawks for second place in the American Northern Division with just eight games left in the regular season.

The Cubs scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning and never trailed in the game. Soler drove in the first-inning run with a single and never looked back. He reached base safely in all six of his plate appearances, adding two more singles, a double, a triple, and a walk in the game. He finished with two RBI and scored three times. 3B Kris Bryant also reached base safely six times in the game. He smashed a solo home run in the sixth inning, singled in the ninth, and tied a career-high with four walks. The homer was his 20th in 62 games with Iowa and his minor league-leading 42nd overall this year.

1B Jonathan Mota added three hits, including a two-run double in the fifth inning, that extended the Cubs' initial lead to 3-0. Mota finished with three RBI. 2B Andrew Ely followed Mota's fifth-inning double with a two-run homer and added an RBI single in the sixth inning. It was his first home run in just his third game with the I-Cubs. His three RBI are a career-high for the Cubs' 32nd round pick in this year's draft.

Cubs' starter Chris Rusin (8-13) worked seven innings and allowed five runs in 10 hits while earning the win. He allowed a two-run homer to Roger Kieschnick in the fifth inning and former Cub Ronny Cedeno delivered a pinch-hit, two-run triple as part of a three-run sixth against him. The win was Rusin's first in five starts with Iowa going back to July 11.

RH Brian Schlitter allowed a leadoff double in the eighth inning and the Aces brought the man around to score with a pair of groundouts. This was Schlitter's first appearance since joining the I-Cubs on a Major League rehab assignment. RH Armando Rivero pitched the ninth and allowed a solo homer to Nick Ahmed before finishing off the game.

Aces' starter Lucas Harrell (6-4) was charged with three runs (two earned) on three hits and issued eight walks in four innings to suffer the loss.

The Cubs travel to Tacoma Sunday and start a four-game series against the Rainiers at 7:05 PM Central time. RH Dallas Beeler (8-6, 3.80) will start for the Cubs against RH Forrest Snow (2-3, 3.06). The game will be broadcast live on AM 940, 104.5 FM, and streamed live at iowacubs.com, with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:40 PM.
