Rancho Cucamonga, CA – The San Jose Giants tallied five runs in the eighth inning, spoiling Rancho Cucamonga’s bid for consecutive wins to open the series, as the Quakes dropped a 6-4 decision on Wednesday night at LoanMart Field.
Four walks from the Rancho pitching staff and a two-run, two-out double by San Jose’s Alexander Suarez put the Giants ahead to stay, as the Quakes let a 4-1 lead slip away.
Rancho built the lead thanks in part to a pair of doubles and an RBI from Dayton Dooney.
The Quaeks’ pitching staff was strong early, as Chris Campos gave the Quakes three innings of one-run baseball, before Kelvin Bautista and Livan Reinoso combined for 3.2 innings of scoreless work.
Brandon Neeck (0-2) got into the eighth-inning trouble, while Joel Ibarra gave up the two-run double to Suarez.
San Jose’s Wilkelma Castillo retired five of six to finish the night, earning his first save. Giants’ reliever Esmerlin Vinicio (4-6) gave up two runs over three innings, but notched the win.
The Quakes (12-14, 51-41) will send Gabe Emmett (5-3) to the mound on Thursday in game three of the series. San Jose will counter with Nomar Medina (3-5) at 6:30pm.
Thursday will be a Thirsty Thursday, with $3 Pepsi products, $4 domestics and other drink specials throughout the night. In addition, the Quakes will transform into Los Temblores de Rancho Cucamonga! Tickets are currently available at rcquakes.com. Go Quakes!
