Caleb Durbin's Big Day Earns Split for Augusta

NORTH AUGUSTA, SC: The finale between the Augusta GreenJackets (7-8) and the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (5-10) was a thriller as the GreenJackets rallied from an early deficit to earn a series split, 6-5.

It was a fast start for the Woodpeckers who scored three times in the opening inning off starting pitcher Tyler Owens, all with two outs as Joey Loperfido brought one run home with a double. Kenedy Corona made it a 3-0 game with a two-run single to cap off the inning.

Sam Strickland relieved Owens in the second inning for his debut appearance with the GreenJackets and he delivered much-needed innings in longevity as the southpaw tossed 4.1 innings while keeping the Woodpeckers in check.

The GreenJackets would begin their rally in the third inning with an RBI double from Caleb Durbin that scored Brian Klein to make it a 3-1 game. Durbin would later score on a wild pitch, pulling Augusta with a run at 3-2.

In the fifth, the GreenJackets would take the lead after an error off the bat of Stephen Paolini tied the game with Caleb Durbin scoring again. Brandol Mezquita followed him up with his team-best tenth RBI of the season on a ground out to plate home Geraldo Quintero to put Augusta on top 4-3.

Fayetteville would not trail for long as they tied the game it in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Victor Mascai to even the game at four.

The game would remain deadlocked at four all the way until the eighth inning when the GreenJackets put together their best threat of the afternoon by loading the bases with nobody out. But Fabricio Reina would hold Augusta down with a strikeout and on a fielders choice, producing an out at home to get two outs.

With the game hanging in the balance, Caleb Durbin played hero at SRP Park by sending a single back up the middle into center field to score Kadon Morton and Adam Zebrowski, making it 6-4 GreenJackets.

Rob Griswold was tasked with the ninth inning on the mound for Augusta after pitching a scoreless eighth inning. The Woodpeckers made it interesting by scoring one run, but Griswold would get Tyler Whitaker to fly out to right field to end the game.

The 6-5 victory for the GreeJackets earned them a split in the six-game series with Fayetteville, Rob Griswold picked up his first win of the season in relief while Fabricio Reina took the loss for the Woodpeckers. Caleb Durbin drove in a total of three runs on three hits, with two of them being doubles to help Augusta fight their way back for their third win of the series.

That concludes act one of the opening homestand for the GreenJackets at SRP Park with the second act beginning on Tuesday with an 11:05 a.m. start time against the Delmarva Shorebird (Baltimore Orioles) for Education Day.

Another home series begins for the Augusta GreenJackets on Tuesday against the Delmarva Shorebirds as it all gets started with Education Day at the ballpark.
