GreenJackets Conclude First Half With Narrow Defeat

Augusta's Ninth Inning Rally Falls One Run Short

FAYETTEVILLE, NC: The final game of the first half for the Augusta GreenJackets (36-30) was a high-scoring one in Fayetteville against the Woodpeckers (31-34) as they fell just short in the first-half finale, 9-8.

After a scoreless first, the Woodpeckers took the lead in the second on a three-run homer by Tyler Whitaker to make it 3-0 Fayetteville.

The GreenJackets responded in the next half-inning by scoring twice. The first run scored on a passed ball to plate Kadon Morton from third to make it 3-1. Brandon Parker followed that with an RBI single to cut the deficit down to one at 3-2.

Fayetteville roared back with an even better bottom of the third by scoring four times with two runs scoring on a double by Victor Mascai with Justin Williams hitting a two-run bomb immediately after to jump the Woodpeckers' lead to 7-2.

Augusta would look to chip away starting in the fifth when they scored two more runs on an RBI triple by Geraldo Quintero to score Caleb Durbin. Quintero would then score on a wild pitch to get the GreenJackets back within three at 7-4.

The home team got a run back in the next half-inning on a two-out home run by Freddy Guilamo to extend Fayetteville's lead to 8-4 on the solo shot.

Caleb Durbin kept Augusta within arm's length of the Woodpeckers with a solo homer of his own in the next half inning to trim the deficit back to three at 8-5.

The Woodpeckers added a key insurance in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double by Logan Cerny to make it 9-5 Fayetteville.

In the ninth, the GreenJackets went to work by putting the first four batters of the inning on base with an error and three straight walks. Kadon Morton scored the first run of the inning on a throwing error by Fayetteville on a steal attempt of third base to pull within three at 9-6. With the bases loaded and nobody out, the next two GreenJackets struck out to open an avenue for the Woodpeckers to get to the finish line. But Adam Zebrowski kept the game going with an infield single that scored two runs to make it a one-run game at 9-8. But Fayetteville was able to stop the damage from there as Brian Klein grounded out to end the ball game with the tying run at third and go-ahead run at second as Augusta fell just short, 9-8.

Nic Swanson (2-2) was the winning pitcher for the Woodpeckers with Kris Anglin (3-5) taking the loss for the GreenJackets. Jayson Schroeder (2) picked up the save for Fayetteville.

Geraldo Quintero had the best night offensively for Augusta finishing 3/3 as he reached base all five times in the game, finishing just a home run shy of the cycle while he also scored twice and drove in a run. Caleb Durbin was 2/4 with a double and a solo homer in the seventh for his second straight multi-hit game while Brandon Parker reached base for the tenth straight contest as he was aboard twice including an RBI single in the third.

The GreenJackets finished the first half at 36-30, their best first-half winning percentage (.545) since 2010 when they were 41-29 (.585).

The second half of the season begins Friday night with a good pitching matchup at Segra Stadium as Augusta sends AJ Smith-Shawver to the hill to face Miguel Ullola for the Woodpeckers. First pitch is at 7:05 pm.
