Augusta Secures Series Win Against Fredericksburg
NORTH AUGUSTA, SC: Saturday night was an excellent night of baseball for the Augusta GreenJackets (7-12) as they took down the Fredericksburg Nationals (14-6) for the fourth time this week with a 9-2 victory.
The night began with a bang for the GreenJackets as Brandon Parker went yard to left-field for a two-run homer to score himself and Cabel Durbin and make it 2-0 Augusta.
Another run would score for the GreenJackets in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Caleb Durbin to up the lead to 3-0.
The lead would grow by two more runs in the fifth on an RBI single by Francisco Floyd followed by a sacrifice fly by Stephen Paolini to up the advantage to 5-0.
That was plenty of run support for starting pitcher Sam Strickland who dealt another strong start as the southpaw finished the night with five shutout innings, six strikeouts to tie his career-high, and allowing just two hits.
The run support would grow in the sixth inning with Kadon Morton bringing home Brian Klein on a two-out, RBI triple. To finish off the frame, Caleb Durbin sent a missile over the left-field wall for his fourth hit of the game to give Augusta an 8-0 advantage.
Two home runs were not enough for the GreenJackets as Stephen Paolini contributed one of his own as he drove his third homer over the right-center wall to make it a 9-0 game in the seventh.
Miguel Peña put up three straight scoreless innings out of the bullpen with the help of some great defense as the GreenJackets turned two double plays and had outfield assists from Brandon Parker and Kadon Morton while he was on the mound to face the minimum of nine batters during his stretch on the mound.
Fredericksburg scored two runs in the ninth to end the shutout but the game ended with Kadon Morton throwing out T.J. White at home for his second outfield assist of the game, and 17th of the season to put a bow on a 9-2 win for the GreenJackets.
Sam Strickland (2-1) cruised to his second win of the season while Bryan Caceres (4-5) was saddled with the loss as the starter for the Nationals.
It was a huge night for the offense, led by Caleb Durbin who collected a career-high four hits with two singles, a double, and a home run to finish with three RBIs in the game. In addition to his two outfield assists, Kadon Morton reached three times with a walk, a double, and an RBI triple in the sixth inning. Brandon Parker and Stephen Paolini each provided a home run as the GreenJackets have now hit six home runs in the last three games.
The series concludes on Sunday at 5:05 pm as Rainiery Rodriguez goes for his second win of the week after tossing a quality start for Augusta on Tuesday as he'll face Pablo Aldonis of Fredericksburg.
The GreenJackets finish their homestand versus the Fredericksburg Nationals on Sunday with Dinosaur night and a Back-to-School Drive with the United Way of the CSRA!
