GreenJackets Rebound with Dominating Performance

Augusta Runs Away from Columbia in Game Two

COLUMBIA, SC: The Augusta GreenJackets (28-25) evened the series with the Columbia Fireflies (15-38) on Wednesday night as they dominated their I-20 Rivals from the opening pitch in a 15-2 victory.

The Augusta bats supplied an early first-inning lead as Geraldo Quintero brought home Caleb Durbin on a double-play ball to make it 1-0 after one.

The GreenJackets would put an early stamp on Wednesday's contest with a big second inning by scoring six times on five hits. The run production began with a two-run single by Caleb Durbin to make it 3-0 Augusta. The next batter, Cal Conley, copied Durbin with a two-run single of his own to elevate the lead to 5-0. Geraldo Quintero kept the line moving with an RBI single to score Conley and extend the lead to 6-0. Brandol Mezquita would make it four-straight run-producing hits as he pulled a double down the left-field line to score Quintero with ease and cap off the six-run frame with Augusta ahead 7-0.

The lead would jump up even further with five more runs scoring in the fifth as Kadon Morton ignited the offense with a solo home run to leadoff the inning, pushing the lead to 8-0. Geraldo Quintero stayed hot at the plate by doubling to right-field, scoring Caleb Durbin to make it 9-0. A few batters later, it was Brandon Parker contributing an RBI on a sacrifice fly to bring home Cal Conley, stretching the lead to double-digits at 10-0. With the bases loaded, Braulio Vasquez drew a walk to earn an RBI the easy way as Quintero scored to up the advantage to 11-0. To finish the inning, Adam Zebrowski grounded into a fielder choice to plate home Brandol Mezquita and make it 12-0 GreenJackets.

Fireflies would break the shutout with a solo shot by Erick Peña in the bottom half of the fifth to trim the Augusta lead to 12-1.

It wouldn't take long for the GreenJackets to get that run back as Brandol Mezquita brought in his second run of the game on a bloop single to right with Quintero scoring for the third time to put Augusta ahead 13-1.

Columbia scored one more run in the bottom half of the sixth on an RBI knock by Guillermo Quintana but that was all she wrote for the Fireflies' offense on Wednesday night.

Luis Vargas pitched five-plus innings on the mound as the right-hander earned his first victory of the season allowing just two runs on five hits. He was relieved by Ronaldo Alesandro who dealt two scoreless innings while leaving a pair of inherited runners on the base paths in the sixth to keep Augusta ahead 13-2.

In the seventh, the GreenJackets brought in two more runs with a bases-loaded walk to Cal Conley and a sacrifice fly by Geraldo Quintero to take Augusta's lead to its largest of the night at 15-2.

Darling Florentino finished the game for the GreenJackets by pitching a scoreless eighth and ninth inning to conclude the 15-2 win for Augusta.

The offensive showcase, which produced 15 runs on 15 hits was led by Cal Conley who had his third, three-hit game of the season while driving in three runs. Geraldo Quintero also had three hits and three RBIs of his own while also touching home three times. Caleb Drubin, Brandol Mezquita, Stephen Paolini, and Adam Zebrowski all contributed multi-hit performances while Kadon Morton belted his third home run of the season in the fifth inning.
