Grey Dominates but Rawhide Come Up Short in Pitcher's Duel

VISALIA, CA - Connor Grey has thrown a perfect game in his career, yet tonight he put up another performance that would be, for many pitchers, one of the best of their career. The righty dished out six dominant innings, whiffing eleven Giants hitters, one shy of his career high, while holding San Jose to two hits.

Grey didn't allow a hit until the fifth, but the Giants took advantage once they finally broke through. Bryce Johnson led off the inning with a double and, with two outs and two strikes, Tanner Murphy punched a single into right to plate Johnson and put the Giants up 1-0.
That would be the last hit, and the only run, that Grey (L, 10-9) would allow. He now has a 2.70 ERA in August and has dipped his season ERA below five for the first time since June 26.
Unfortunately, Visalia (63-64/26-31) provided little support for him offensively.
The Rawhide mustered six hits but never had more than one hit in an inning. One runner reached scoring position, when Luis Alejandro Basabe stole second base following his two-out, fourth-inning single. Giants starter DJ Myers matched Grey zero for zero to start the game and dished out six shutout innings, holding Visalia to just four hits while striking out four and walking none.
Myers (W, 6-3) survived loud contact throughout the game and beat the Rawhide for the first time this season.
No player put up a multi-hit performance for Visalia. Drew Ellis extended his hitting streak to seven games with a single in the fourth, but he was picked off to end the inning. Adam Walton also added a hit and, with a runner on in the eighth, hit a moonshot foul down the line in left.
West Tunnell delivered two scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the Rawhide, striking out a pair, and Jason Creasy pitched a scoreless top of the ninth inning, striking out one.
San Jose (55-72/21-36) has now won three consecutive games for the first time in over a month. They've come out on top in seven of their last twelve contests. With Modesto defeating Stockton at Banner Island Ballpark, the Rawhide remain tied with the Ports for first place. Their magic number for a playoff berth remains at 12.
The series continues tomorrow night with RHP Cole Stapler (0-5, 4.58) on the bump against Giants LHP John Gavin (0-2, 5.93). First pitch is at 7:00 PM and tickets are available on rawhidebaseball.com.
