The Sacramento River Cats (16-15) beat the Fresno Grizzlies (19-13) 6-3 Monday night from Chukchansi Park, earning a series win. Sacramento starter Dereck Rodríguez (2-0) picked up the win after six shutout innings. He scattered four hits, three walks and punched out six. Fresno starter Cy Sneed (2-2) suffered the decision after giving up four runs (earned) in six frames. He allowed seven hits, walking one with three strikeouts.
In all four games of the series, Sacramento took the first lead in the top of the fourth. Kyle Jensen and Caleb Gindl spanked RBI singles while a wild pitch allowed the third run to cross the plate. The River Cats extended the advantage to 4-0 in the top of the fifth when Chris Shaw doubled to shallow left.
Fresno cut the deficit to 4-2 in the bottom of the eighth when Garrett Stubbs (2-for-4) lasered a two-run single to right.
Ronnie Freeman added some insurance runs in the top of the ninth with a two-run homer to left. His first big fly of the season made it 6-2.
Fresno forced home one more run in the home half of the ninth when Kyle Tucker (2-for-4) yanked a RBI single. The three-run lead was enough though for Jose Valdez, as he closed the door on a series win.
Despite the loss, Tony Kemp (2-for-5) continued his team-high hitting streak to 13 games, while J.D. Davis pushed his streak to double-digits. In his last 10 games, Davis is 20-for-40 with a bomb, nine doubles and 13 RBI.
The Grizzlies head on the road for a four-game set at the Las Vegas 51s starting Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PT. Fresno RHP Mike Hauschild (2-3, 5.10) battles Las Vegas RHP Chris Flexen (2-2, 3.82).
