The Fresno Grizzlies (71-59) failed to split the four-game set with the Reno Aces (73-57) by falling 3-1 in the series finale Tuesday night at Greater Nevada Field. By winning the season series 9-8, the Aces secured the first place tiebreaker should it be necessary. Fresno is now two games back in the Pacific North Division.
Tony Kemp (2-for-4) had the lone RBI for the Grizzlies when his single in the fifth extended his current club-high hit streak to six games and scored Garrett Stubbs who doubled to get on. Kemp had the only two-hit night for Fresno, his team-leading 50th multi-hit game. He has had multiple hits in 45 percent of his 110 games played.
Fresno starter Mike Hauschild held Reno scoreless through the first five frames only allowing three hits. He walked a season-high seven batters and struck out four. Reliever Kevin Comer struck out two in the sixth to keep the game scoreless before Reymin Guduan entered in relief in the seventh. Guduan (5-6) went on to suffer the loss.
The Aces scored three in an eight-batter seventh to take a 3-1 lead to the end. Zach Borenstein (2-for-4) hit his 21st home run of the season, a two-run shot to center that scored Christian Walker who doubled to get on. Then, Jack Reinheimer singled to get on and scored on a Kristopher Negrón (2-for-3) RBI single.
Reno reliever Jared Miller (3-2) earned the win for the home team while starter Eric Jokisch allowed one run through six innings for a quality start. He walked three and struck out three. Silvino Bracho picked up his sixth save of the season for the Aces with a strikeout to end the game.
The Grizzlies head back to Chukchansi Park for their final home series of the season. A four-game series against the Tacoma Rainiers begins on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Probable starters are RHP Christian Bergman (9-3, 5.02) for Tacoma and RHP David Martinez (6-11, 4.81) for Fresno.
