Thanks to a four-run third, the El Paso Chihuahuas (25-25) defeated the Fresno Grizzlies (29-21) 4-3 Saturday night from Chukchansi Park. El Paso starter Miguel Diaz set the tone with four shutout frames, allowing one hit, four walks and striking out four. Then, he gave way to T.J. Weir (2-0, win), Jonathan Aro and Robert Stock who closed the door with five innings and six punchouts.
The Chihuahuas leaped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the third when Auston Bousfield (2-for-4) lined a two-run single to right field. He would score on a single by Luis Urías. After an error allowed Urias to get to third, a sacrifice fly by Brett Nicholas made it 4-0.
Fresno would not go away quietly, plating three combined runs in the seventh and eighth. A double play brought Nick Tanielu (2-for-3) home in the bottom of the seventh. Then, in the eighth, AJ Reed jacked a solo shot to right-center. It was his fourth straight game with a homer versus El Paso, his fifth in six games versus the Chihuahuas and his 10th of the year (team-high). The bomb also placed him in sole possession of fifth for career home runs (59). Next, Tanielu singled home Tim Federowicz (2-for-4), who doubled two batters prior.
Stock fanned the side in the ninth to pick up his first save of the season.
Mike Hauschild (2-5) suffered the loss after seven innings of four-run ball. He scattered four hits, one walk and struck out nine (ties season-high).
Both teams continue the series with game three of five Sunday afternoon from Chukchansi Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PT with pre-game starting at 12:45 PT on milb.streamguys1.com/fresnogrizzlies.
