PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (August 18, 2017) - Jonah Heim's walk-off hit in the bottom of the ninth sent the Charlotte Stone Crabs home 3-2 winners over the Clearwater Threshers Friday night at Charlotte Sports Park.
With the game tied at two in the bottom of the ninth, Charlotte (62-60, 31-23) second baseman Riley Unroe lined a single to center with one out against Clearwater (62-63, 24-31) reliever Tyler Gilbert (0-6). Thomas Milone then lined a hit to left to push Unroe to third. The next batter was Heim, who punched a base hit to right to win the game.
Stone Crabs' reliever Dalton Moats (6-0) worked 1.1 scoreless innings to earn the win.
In a scoreless game in the bottom of the second, Unroe lined a single to center before Milone bounced a hit to left to put runners at first and second. Heim followed by rolling a single to center to give Charlotte a 1-0 lead. The next batter was Lucius Fox , who chopped a hit over the mound to score Milone and give the Stone Crabs a 2-0 advantage.
With Charlotte still up two in the top of the eighth, Clearwater first baseman Wilson Garcia and Edgar Cabral both singled to start the inning. After the next two batters were retired, Jose Antiquera dumped a single into right to pull the Threshers to within 2-1. After a pitching change, Emmanuel Marrero put down a bunt single to plate the tying run.
Stone Crabs relieve Tyler Brashears worked 3.1 scoreless innings after starter Matt Andriese left with an injury in the first inning.
The Stone Crabs go for the series win over the Threshers Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. Brandon Lawson (4-5, 4.64) makes the start for Charlotte against Ranger Suárez (2-3, 3.00) of Clearwater. Coverage begins at 5:50 p.m. on the Stone Crabs Baseball Network.
