MISSOULA, MT - The Missoula Osprey jumped out to an early lead and went on to defeat the Helena Brewers 6-5 on Sunday evening at Ogren Park Allegiance Field. The loss snapped the Brewers win streak at six games.
Helena starter Michael Petersen allowed a run on three hits in the first inning, and then ran into big trouble in the second.
Missoula's Ernie de la Trinidad got the offense going with a one-out single that he lined off Petersen's right foot. After opting to stay in the game, Petersen hit a man and allowed a single to Gabriel Maciel to load the bases. Keshawn Lynch drove in a pair with a single to center and he would come around to score one batter later on a Luis Lara double that put the Osprey up 5-0.
Helena, held hitless through the first three frames by Brady Muller, finally got going with two outs in the fourth. Peyton Henry lined a base hit to center and back-to-back walks loaded the bases for Jose Gomez. The 5-foot-3-inch outfielder, who had homered twice in Saturday's 11-1 Brewers win, delivered again. Gomez blasted a 1-1 pitch over the wall in right to pull the Brewers within one at 5-4. The grand slam was Gomez's second in as many games, and increased his RBI total to nine in the two games in Missoula.
Alec Bettinger (3IP, 1H, 4K) and Brandon Presley (2IP, 1H, 2K) combined to silence the Missoula bats for 5 innings and that allowed the Brewers to tie the game in the seventh on a throwing error by Missoula reliever Nestor Ramirez.
With the game tied 5-5 in the bottom of the 8th, Brandon Texiera retired the first man he faced, but served up a solo shot to Kyle Smith that put the Osprey ahead for good.
The Brewers managed to get the tying run on third with nobody out in the top of the ninth, but Abraham Almonte notched his first save of the season with back-to-back strikeouts and a Dallas Carroll pop out to Smith in foul ground.
The series concludes on Monday night with a contest that will pit Karsen Lindell (0-0, 6.00) against Tyler Vail (0-0, 12.15). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM. The game can be heard locally on KCAP 95.9 FM/AM 950, TuneIn Radio and the MiLB First Pitch app.
