HELENA, MT - Four errors proved costly as the Helena Brewers (15-20) fell to the Ogden Raptors 9-3 at Kindrick Legion Field on Tuesday.
Helena jumped out to a lead thanks to a pair of long balls in the bottom of fourth. With one out, Zach Clark drove a 1-2 pitch to the deepest part of the park, clearing the wall just to the right of the 400 foot sign in straight away center field for his fourth home run of the season, giving Helena a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Chad McClanahan smacked a fastball over the left field wall, his third home run of the year, to make it 2-0 Brewers.
Ogden (20-15) got a run back to start the fifth thanks to a lead off home run by Donovan Casey, his first with the Raptors. A one-out walk put a runner on base for Ronny Brito, who rolled a balled towards Antonio Pinero that seemed destined for a double play. Pinero had the ball slip under his glove and out into center field, setting up runners on the corners after the fielding error. Brito stole second and two batters later, Luis Paz singled to right, bringing in both runners to give the Raptors a 3-2 lead.
The Brewers responded by taking advantage of a pair of errors in the bottom of the fifth. Following a two-out walk to Jose Gomez, Dallas Carroll bounced a ball to third. Gomez was cancelled out on a 5-4 putout, but the throw to first went wide of the bag, allowing Carroll to motor around to second. Catcher Gersel Pitre retrieved the ball in foul ground and attempted gun down Carroll at second, but his throw drifted away from the second baseman, sending Carroll to third on the throwing error. He would come in to score on a wild pitch and tie the game at 3-3.
Two more errors turned the tide in the Raptors favor in the sixth. Helena tried to start a 6-4-3 double play but Franly Mallen dropped the ball at second before an out was recorded. The next batter bounced a high chopper towards reliever Dylan File (0-2), who sailed a throw wide of Gabriel Garcia at first, brining in two more Ogden runs to make it 5-3. Brito doubled to cap the rally, extending the Raptor lead to 6-3.
Ogden used four hits in the eighth inning to put the game out of reach, scoring three runs in an inning for the third time. File took the loss after throwing 4.0 innings of relief, allowing six runs, two earned, on six hits while not walking a batter and striking out two. Right-hander Karsen Lindell did not factor into the decision in his first start since July 3, tossing 5.0 innings and allowing three runs, one earned, on four hits while walking four and striking out four. In total, the Brewers allowed six unearned runs.
Helena concludes their three-game series with the Raptors at Kindrick Legion Field on Wednesday night at 7:05 PM.
