The Helena Brewers (18-31, 5-8) had their three-game winning streak snapped in a 6-3 loss to the Orem Owlz (36-15-1, 10-4) on Tuesday night at Kindrick Legion Field.
For the third consecutive game, the Brewers scored a run in the first inning. Kenny Corey doubled to start the bottom of the first and advanced to third on a wild pitch from Owlz starter Mayky Perez (3-1). Following a walk to KJ Harrison, Jay Feliciano roped a single to left, scoring Corey to give the Brewers a 1-0 lead. Feliciano extended his hitting streak to six games, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, a walk and a run scored.
Orem charged back to take the lead for good in the top of the second. Brewers starter Jayson Rose allowed a single before giving up back-to-back home runs to Harrison Wenson and Manuel Guzman, giving the Owlz a 3-1 lead. Franklin Torres doubled, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly, pushing the Orem lead to 4-1. Rose (1-4) took his third consecutive loss, tossing 4.0 innings and allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits while walking one and striking out two.
After the Owlz scored another run in the top of the fourth, Feliciano was at the heart of Helena's answer in the home half of the inning. The first baseman singled and took second on a wild pitch before scoring on a Payton Henry single, bringing the Brewers within three runs at 5-2.
Yet again, Orem responded with a run in the top of the fifth, lengthening their lead back to four runs at 6-2. The Brewers wouldn't find a run again until the bottom of the seventh. Feliciano walked to start the inning, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error from Owlz catcher Harrison Wenson. Jose Gomez doubled down the left field line, driving in the run to make it 6-3. Nicolas Pierre flew out to end the frame, leaving Helena in a three-run hole.
The Brewers managed to get a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the eighth inning when Antonio Pinero singled to start the frame and stole second. It was the last hit Helena managed, as Owlz pitching retired the next six Brewers batters in order.
Helena continues their series with the Owlz on Wednesday night at 7:05 PM. The Brewers are scheduled to send RHP Gabe Friese (0-0, 3.00) to the mound against Owlz RHP Elvin Rodriguez (4-1, 2.76).
