(Trenton, NJ) – After playing three one-run games in their most recent series loss in Rochester, the Buffalo Bisons were on the positive side in Tuesday night’s series opener against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs at Trenton Thunder Ballpark. Despite trailing for most of the night, Bisons pitchers didn’t permit a run after the top of the second and allowed the bottom of the lineup to spark the comeback with two outs in the seventh. Logan Warmoth’s double into left tied the score and Nash Knight’s two-bagger into right provided the difference in Buffalo’s 2-1 win before a crowd of 3,051.
Thomas Hatch’s finest start opened with a pair of strikeouts in a perfect top of the first. The only negative came in the second when Mickey Moniak led off with a triple off the top of the wall in left-center field. Two batters later, Darick Hall pulled a groundball to first with the infield back for his 17th run batted in and a 1-0 IronPigs lead.
Hatch worked around base hits in the third and fourth before retiring the side in order during his final inning in the fifth. In total, he permitted just the one run on three hits while striking out a season-high six for the second straight start. Lefthanders Ryan Borucki and Travis Bergen (1-0) had identical frames in the sixth and seventh when they induced 4-6-3 double plays after leadoff singles before a strikeout to end their innings.
The Bisons only generated four hits against IronPigs righthander David Paulino during his four innings in his first start of the season. Mike Adams then twirled two hitless innings to put himself in line for the win before the Bisons scored twice against Cam Bedrosian (0-1) with two outs in the seventh. Prior to the Warmoth and Knight doubles, Cullen Large picked up his second single with a one out knock before coming around to score the tying run.
Curtis Taylor battled in the top of the eighth for the Bisons as he worked around a one-out single from veteran Ruben Tejada. Knight then made one of the plays of the night with a diving stop down the line at third to throw out Jake Elmore for the second out before Dalton Guthrie flied out with the tying run at second base. Hobie Harris later worked a clean ninth inning for his fifth save to improve Buffalo’s record against Lehigh Valley to 5-2.
The Bisons and IronPigs play the second game of their six-game series at Trenton Thunder Ballpark on Wednesday, July 14 at 7:00 PM. The first 1,000 fans ages 13 & up will receive a Bat Boy Tommy Jersey, presented by the Hamilton YMCA. To purchase tickets, call (609)-394-3300, Opt 4 or visit trentonthunder.com.
