MOBILE, Ala. (July 6, 2017) - Down to the final strike in the bottom of the ninth inning, trailing 2-1, Michael Hermosillo hit a walk-off, three-run homer to give the Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, a 4-2 win over the Mississippi Braves Thursday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.
It was Hermosillo's third home run, and Mobile's second walk-off home run of the season. The game-winning blast increased the BayBears win streak to a season-long four straight games and handed Mississippi its ninth consecutive loss.
The BayBears (37-46 overall, 7-7 second half) took a 1-0 lead on a Tim Arakawa home run in the bottom of the first. However, the early advantage was short-lived.
Mississippi (37-41, 3-11) tied the game with a run on a fielder's choice in the top of the second. Jared James hit an RBI double in the fifth inning to put the Braves in front.
Mississippi tallied two runs on four hits against Grayson Long , who exited the game after 4 2/3 innings. Luiz Gohara did not allow a run after the first inning homer, going 6 2/3 innings and striking out six batters. However, the starters did not factor in the decision.
Jeremy Rhoades and Greg Mahle (2-0) combined to hold the Braves scoreless and hitless, retiring nine straight batters from the seventh through ninth.
The BayBears continue the five-game series against Mississippi Friday at 7:05 p.m. CT. Right-handed pitcher Alex Klonowski (4-4, 3.45 ERA) is slated to make the start against southpaw Kolby Allard (4-6, 3.05 ERA) for the Braves.
