CORPUS CHRISTI - Jamison Hill fired seven innings of one-run ball Saturday night, leading Amarillo to a 5-3 win over Corpus Christi before 6,008 fans at Whataburger Field.
The Hooks, playing this weekend as the Corpus Christi Cumbias, aim for a win in Sunday's finale to claim the six-game series.
Hill, while matching his career-best in innings pitched, authored the win by limiting CC to a third-inning home run from C.J. Stubbs. The Amarillo right-hander finished his evening by retiring the last 10 Cumbias in order.
Pinch-hitter Joey Loperfido snapped a stretch of 14 consecutive hits with a bad-hop single in the ninth. Chad Stevens followed by crushing an 0-2 pitch into the left-centerfield bullpen to make it a 5-3 contest. Stevens, who has homered in back-to-back games, owns three dingers in his last six assignments.
Austin Pope countered by striking out the next two batters for his second save.
Hooks lefty Colton Gordon allowed only one unearned run over five innings.
Former Hooks Seth Beer reached base three times and turned a 3-1 ballgame into a 5-1 affair by belting a home run down the right-field line in the eighth.
