Hip Hip Jorge: Rockies #7 prospect enjoys career-night as Grizzlies growl past Giants 8-5 in series finale

San Jose, CA (Sunday, August 13) – The Fresno Grizzlies (65-43, 29-13) outlasted the San Jose Giants (60-48, 20-22) 8-5 Sunday evening from Excite Ballpark. The Grizzlies improved to 29-13 (.690) in the second half, 32-14 (.696) in their last 46 games and 42-17 (.712) in their last 59 contests. Fresno won the regular season series 14-13 over San Jose despite dropping four of the final six games to their divisional rival. The Grizzlies hold a five-game lead over the Modesto Nuts in the second half standings with 24 contests to go (12 vs. one another).

Every batter for Fresno reached base in some capacity, with the lineup producing 10 total hits. Rockies #7 overall prospect Dyan Jorge led the way with a career-night. Jorge recorded a professional-best four hits, including a hustle double in the first. He added three RBI and two runs (one wild pitch) to pad the stats. Two of Jorge’s three RBI came with two outs in the top of the second, a crucial turning point early. The Cuban native finished the series with 10 hits and two walks. Skyler Messinger hammered his 15th homer of the season, a solo shot in the third. Jean Perez drew a bases-loaded walk in the second and Jake Snider laced his ninth triple of 2023. The Grizzlies plated two insurance runs in the ninth thanks to three Giants errors.

San Jose’s offense supplied seven hits with four of them ending in extra-bases. Tanner O’Tremba destroyed a three-run clout in the seventh, his sixth longball of the season. Cole Foster also went deep, a solo blast to right in the eighth. It was his first tater since joining the Giants. P.J. Hilson tattooed a triple and waltzed home on an Alexander Suarez sacrifice fly. Turner Hill posted a double, reaching base three total times. Diego Velasquez was issued three walks and slapped a single in the setback.

Rockies #23 overall prospect Jake Madden made his second start with Fresno after being traded from the Angels on July 30. Madden cruised through three scoreless innings, permitting a pair of hits and walks, while fanning two. Robinson Hernandez (1-0) earned the victory after three and two-thirds frames of relief. Carlos Torres mustered an inning of work, allowing both wallops. Zach Agnos wrapped up the win with a four-out save. Agnos has a Minor League-best 23 saves on the year, one shy of tying for third all-time in Grizzlies single-season saves. Giants’ lefty Nomar Medina (4-6) suffered the loss after four frames of five-run ball. The clubs are off on Monday.
