CORPUS CHRISTI - The Corpus Christi Hooks will be included in Minor League Baseball's inaugural "Copa de la Diversión," or "Fun Cup" series during the 2018 season.
Minor League Baseball announced launch of its new initiative on Monday, a season-long effort to celebrate diversity and honor local U.S. Hispanic/Latino communities across the nation. There are 33 MiLB teams are involved in the initiative throughout the 2018 season. The Hooks will participate from July 5-7 at Whataburger Field, with contests against Arkansas and Northwest Arkansas.
The club will create a culturally-relevant on-field persona to be unveiled on March 20, including "Copa de la Diversión"-branded uniforms. Game-used caps and jerseys will be auctioned at the conclusion of the season, with proceeds donated to a U.S. Hispanic/Latino-focused organization in the Coastal Bend community.
"The Hooks are thrilled to participate in this initiative and represent such a vital part of our community," Hooks vice president of sales and marketing Andy Steavens said. "It's extremely important to us that as an organization that we honor the Hispanic community in South Texas, and celebrate our diverse fanbase. The Hooks will represent the culture in a unique way during these games and we're very excited to have everyone join us in the celebration."
Based on the successful launch of Minor League Baseball's national "It's Fun to Be a Fan" (and corresponding Spanish-language "Es Divertido Ser Un Fan") marketing campaign in 2017, participating teams will bolster their marketing and customer service efforts this upcoming season to create a culturally-relevant gameday experience through music, concessions and promotions.
