Howard Tosses 7.0-Inning Gem Against Las Vegas, Allows Only One Hit

ROUND ROCK, Texas – Round Rock Express RHP Spencer Howard was named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week for June 27-July 3, as announced by Minor League Baseball on Tuesday afternoon. Round Rock hurlers have earned the league’s Pitcher of the Week title in back-to-back weeks after LHP Cole Ragans earned the award from June 20-26.

Howard made one start on Thursday, June 30 against the Las Vegas Aviators (Oakland Athletics) as he tossed 7.0 innings of scoreless baseball and allowed only one hit. He walked one and struck out a season-high 11 while throwing just 93 pitches. RHP Spencer Patton took over for the final two frames to help complete the 3-0 shutout.

In six starts during June, Howard went 3-1 with a 2.53 ERA (9 ER/32.0 IP). He lasted at least 5.0 innings in all six starts. Six of the nine runs he allowed last month came in the first inning against Sugar Land on June 14, but he did not allow a hit in the following 4.1 innings.

The San Luis Obispo, California native will start for the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night against the Baltimore Orioles at 6:05 p.m. CT from Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Howard began the season with Texas, primarily out of the bullpen. He appeared in three games with one start before he was optioned to Round Rock on April 30.

The righty was traded to the Rangers from the Philadelphia Phillies on July 30, 2021. He appeared in one start on a rehab assignment for Round Rock last season. He went 2.0 innings and allowed one run on September 2, 2021, before returning to the Rangers for the remainder of the 2021 campaign. Howard has a career ERA of 7.36 (66 ER/80.2 IP) in the major leagues over 28 games and 22 starts.

Round Rock returns to Dell Diamond on Wednesday, July 6 for game two of the series with the Albuquerque Isotopes (Colorado Rockies). Express RHP Tyson Miller (2-3, 4.53) is set to make the start against Isotopes RHP Ashton Goudeau (--, --). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CT.
