CHARLESTON, W.Va. (April 23, 2019) - Ryne Inman did not allow a hit through 5.1 innings and struck out a career-high 10 batters, while Ryne Ogren ignited a six-run second inning with a solo home run as the Power downed the Columbia Fireflies, 10-3, Tuesday night at Appalachian Power Park.
Inman (3-0) retired the first eight hitters he faced, not allowing a single Columbia (7-11) base runner until the third inning off a dropped third strike that put Bradley Marquez aboard with two down in the inning. He then walked Shervyen Newton before striking out Walter Rasquin to end the frame.
The West Virginia (11-6) lineup continued their hot streak by striking for two runs in the first inning ignited by a leadoff double fromCharlie McConnell off Jaison Vilera (1-2). Onil Pena would score McConnell on a two-base error, while a pair of walks and a sacrifice fly from Bobby Honeyman added another run for a 2-0 cushion.
However, the real damage was done in the bottom of the second from the Power order. Following a groundout to start the inning, Ogren crushed a fastball over the right field wall to increase the West Virginia lead to 3-0. A pair of walks ensued before Dean Nevarez laced a two-run double to right to make it 5-0.
Joseph Rosa followed that up with an RBI single, and, two batters later, Nick Rodriguez doubled in a pair to extend the lead to 8-0. West Virginia would tally another run in the third inning off a Pena groundout to push their edge to 9-0.
Inman solidified his career night in the fourth when he struck out the side in order to raise his total to eight for the game. He would finish his outing in the sixth when he notched his tenth strikeout, a new career high, becoming the second straight Power starter to total double-digit strikeouts after Clay Chandler accomplished the feat Monday night.
Sal Biasi relieved Inman in the sixth and carried the no-hitter into the seventh after inducing a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning. In the seventh, Ronny Mauricio singled to break up the bid, and was promptly brought home on a two-run homer by Zach Rheams to end the shutout.
Cesar Trejo led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo homer, his second of the year, to raise the lead to 10-2. Columbia would put another one on the board in the ninth against Dayeison Arias, who ultimately shut the door by striking out the side to close out the 10-3 win.
The Power recorded double-digit runs for the second time this season (April 18 at Asheville) and at least five runs in a game for the seventh straight night.
West Virginia concludes its three game set with Columbia Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. at Appalachian Power Park. RHP Christian James (0-2, 5.40 ERA) heads to the bump for the Fireflies, while the Power's starter has yet to be named. PHOENIX – A farm system loses an elite-level prospect like Jackson Chourio, who was the No. 2 overall prospect in baseball at the start of the 2024 season, to the big leagues, it’s easy to understand that it would take a hit in this year’s farm system rankings. So don’t
Cubs have MLB stars AND loaded farm system
MESA, Ariz. – It’s a testament to where a farm system is when a Top 100-caliber hitter gets traded away and there’s still a desire to tout the bats. The Cubs traded Cam Smith to the Astros in the Kyle Tucker deal, but they still have seven players on the
