SALISBURY, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds, in conjunction with the Baltimore Orioles, are pleased to announce that outfielder Jake Ring has been named the organization's Minor League Player of the Month for April.
The 22-year-old from Ingleside, Ill. batted .359/.419/.667 over 21 games in the month, racking up nine doubles, three triples, three home runs, and 19 RBIs along the way. He also scored 15 runs, stole six bases on seven attempts, and recorded three outfield assists for good measure. At the end of the month he led the Shorebirds in batting average, hits, RBIs, doubles, triples, home runs, extra-base hits, total bases, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, OPS, and outfield assists.
The bulk of Ring's work came on the Shorebirds' first homestand of the year, a seven-gamer from April 13 through 19. Ring delighted the Perdue Stadium faithful to the tune of a .571 mark (16-28) with 10 extra-base hits and 12 RBIs. He hit .543 (19-35) over a nine-game hitting streak from April 13 through 22 and closed the month on a four-gamer that has since extended to six.
The Orioles drafted Ring out of the University of Missouri in the 31st round of the 2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft. His signing scout was Scott Thomas.
Ring has already begun his push for a claim on next month's award. In an afternoon game in Columbia on May 3, he went 2-for-4 with a double, home run, and two RBIs. His first-inning solo homer off Merandy Gonzalez broke the Firefly starter's 28.2-inning scoreless streak to start the season.
As of publication, Ring is tied with Hagerstown's Juan Soto for the South Atlantic League lead in hitting (.360). He also leads the circuit in triples (3), slugging (.686), and extra-base hits (17) while ranking top-five in four other categories.
