PASCO, WA – Ryan Jennings and Rafael Ohashi dominated for the first seven innings and the Canadians offense did more than enough in a 5-0 win over the Tri-City Dust Devils [Angels] in a Wednesday matinee at Gesa Stadium.
After two scoreless frames from Jennings, the C’s took the lead for good with a run in the top of the third. Ryan McCarty singled to start the frame then took off for second during the next at-bat. The throw from the catcher went into centerfield to allow McCarty to reach third and he scored on a Jace Bohrofen sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.
Vancouver sent all nine men to the dish in the fourth to score four runs and put the game away. Brennan Orf and Dylan Rock led off with consecutive base hits then Jaden Rudd walked to load the bases. Estiven Machado followed with a ground ball back to the mound that could have started a double play, but Dust Devils starter Walbert Urena’s (L, 0-3) throw was wild and the error allowed a run to come home. After a strikeout, Jeff Wehler cleared the bases with a double to put the Canadians in front 5-0.
Once Jennings wrapped up his four scoreless stanzas that featured one infield hit, one walk and four strikeouts, Ohashi (W, 2-0) took over and kept Tri-City on their heels. The 21-year-old faced one batter over the minimum in three strong innings of relief in which he allowed one hit, struck out three and didn’t walk a batter. He passed the baton to Conor Larkin and Justin Kelly, who faced a combined seven batters over the last two frames to secure Vancouver’s third shutout win of the season.
The C’s pitching staff allowed only one runner past second base and kept Tri-City from putting multiple men aboard at any point in the game. On offense, Wehler and Nick Goodwin finished with two hits apiece while Bohrofen reached three times thanks to a pair of walks and a hit by pitch.
Chris McElvain toes the slab tomorrow night for Vancouver looking to lead the Canadians to a guaranteed series split. Tri-City counters with Chris Clark. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. Catch all the action via Sportsnet (alt feed), CanadiansBaseball.com or the MiLB app.
