Sierra, Pertuz collect inside-the-parkers

In a game that may have already found a place in the "I'll never see that again" archives, Jonathan Sierra and Fabian Pertuz lofted Low-A Myrtle Beach to victory by pulling off one of the rarest feats in baseball. Namely, an inside-the-park home run apiece.

Sierra's big blow turned out to be a grand slam, and he and Pertuz combined for six RBIs while making Segra Park history in the Pelicans' 6-4 victory over the Fireflies on Tuesday night.

Pertuz opened the scoring by lifting a fly ball into the alley in left-center field with fifth-ranked Cubs prospect Ed Howard on first and two outs. Fireflies left fielder Burle Dixon and center fielder Diego Hernandez collided while attempting to play the ball, and it landed safely in fair territory. As they attempted to regain their bearings, Chicago's infield prospect motored around the bases and slid home safely to put Myrtle Beach on the board.

In the seventh, Sierra came to bat with the bases loaded and two outs. After falling behind in the count 1-2, the 22-year-old connected on a fastball that was right down the middle of the plate and launched it to right-center. The ball ricocheted off the wall and took a carom away from Hernandez. As the Fireflies' outfielders chased down the ball, the 20-year-old scampered around the bases to record the first inside-the-park grand slam in Segra Park history. The play capped the Pelicans' scoring and ultimately proved to be the difference in the game.

Through 40 games with the Pelicans, Pertuz is sporting a .237/.279/.345 slash line with three home runs, six doubles, 19 RBIs and 19 runs scored this season. The infielder's dinger was his first in 13 contests, and his three taters so far this season mark a career best.

It was the second straight multihit game for Sierra, who added a base knock to right in the second. The speedy outfielder is batting .261/.365/.360 with a pair of long balls, a triple, eight doubles, 29 RBIs and 23 runs scored. Sierra has recorded seven hits over the past four games. Tuesday's four RBIs matched a season high the outfielder set in his first game of the season on May 15.
