JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp’s rally in the bottom of the ninth fell short in their 3-1 loss to the Iowa Cubs Wednesday night at 121 Financial Ballpark.

After three scoreless innings, Iowa (61-70) took their first and only lead in the top of the fourth. Levi Jordan led off with a double off Jacksonville (69-61) starter Braxton Garrett (L, 2-2). Three batters later, Jared Young singled off Bryan Hoeing to plate the first run of the game for the I-Cubs.

The Cubs added to their lead in the top of the sixth. Darius Hill led off with a double and advanced to third on a groundball by Matt Mervis two batters later. In the ensuing at-bat, John Hicks reached on an error but Hill scored from third to give Iowa a 2-1 lead. Young followed up with a double, scoring Hicks from first to give the Cubs a 3-0 advantage.

Jacksonville’s lone run came in the ninth but the offense couldn’t mount a late rally. Erik González led off with a double and scored three batters later on a single from Santiago Chavez to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Jacksonville and Iowa continue their six-game series Thursday at 7:05 p.m. RHP Jeff Lindgren (3-2, 5.51) gets the ball for the Jumbo Shrimp and the I-Cubs will start to RHP Matt Swarmer (3-2, 3.00).
