The Jupiter Hammerheads dropped their 2022 season opener to the Palm Beach Cardinals 7-5 on Friday. In an early Duel of the Dean, the Cardinals' strong pitching performance was too much for the Hammerheads.

The Marlins No. 1 overall prospect (according to MLB Pipeline) Kahlil Watson played in his first full-season game and batted lead-off for Jupiter. The starting shortstop picked up his first hit of the season with a ground-rule double to dead center in the seventh inning.

Joining Watson on the infield to open 2022 were Marlins No. 9 overall prospect Jose Salas and No. 29 prospect Cristhian Rodriguez. Salas hit a double in the first inning to kickstart his 2022 campaign. The 18-year-old would score later for Jupiter’s first run of the new season. Rodriguez finished the game 0-4 while starting at third base.

Catcher Sam Praytor and right fielder Brady Allen both picked up their first RBI in the new year. Praytor played with the Hammerheads in 2021 after being drafted in the 6th round of the 2021 draft from Alabama. Allen was selected by the Marlins the round prior to Praytor from the University of South Carolina.

On the mound for the Hammerheads was Chris Mokma. The Michigan native pitched five innings in his 2022 debut. The righty led Jupiter in innings pitched, games started, and was top-3 in strikeouts for the Hammerheads last season. Tyler Eckberg and Jake Schrand also toed the rubber for Jupiter in the season opener.

The Palm Beach Cardinals' pitching staff proved to be too much for the young Hammerheads team at the end of the day. The Beach Birds tallied 17 strikeouts, eight of which came from right-handed starter Inohan Paniagua. Reliever Chris Gerard earned the win in the game despite a strong performance from Paniagua.

The Hammerheads and Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday night for Game Two of the 2022 season. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00pm at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.
