Smith locked in at plate with Lansing

Wednesday night might have seemed like deja vu for Kevin Smith.
Toronto's No. 19 prospect matched his season high with five RBIs to lead Class A Lansing to its eighth straight win with a 12-2 rout of Dayton at Cooley Law School Stadium.

"We're having a lot of fun," Smith said. "We actually had one of our rovers [Rafael Dubois] come up a few games ago at the beginning of our win streak. We put a picture of him up in the dugout and haven't lost since, so we have to give all these wins to him."
Since driving in five runs on April 24, the 21-year-old has boosted his average from .276 to .379 and leads the Midwest League with 37 RBIs. 
"I give a lot of everything to my routine," Smith said. "I want to go into every game where I'm comfortable where I'm at and what work I put in before the game, after the game, on off days and stuff like that. It's all about trying to stay consistent with my approach and my swing. I want every day to be I don't have to worry, just I know I put my work in and the game will sort itself out."
The shortstop belted a two-run homer to left field in the fifth inning then cleared the bases with his 20th double of the season over the head of center fielder Stuart Fairchild an inning later.
"I'm just trying to be consistent," Smith said. "I'm trying to get my routine down and just trying to make sure I feel the same every day at the plate. I want to swing at good pitches and find the barrel."
The 2017 fourth-rounder has crossed the plate in eight straight games despite going 0-for-3 on Tuesday against Dayton. Smith posted back-to-back three-hit contests and a 15-game hit streak prior to his first game without one since May 6. 

"The ultimate goal is to score runs," he said. "We have a lot of guys scoring a lot of runs. A lot of guys get on with walks even when they're not having good nights at the plate. I think we all just want to get on for the guy behind us. You want to drive them in. They all do a good job getting on base, then you come up with guys on you feel like it's your responsibility to bring them in."
Smith garnered the league's Offensive Player of the Week award for last week and also received the honor on April 29.
"It all kind of goes back to the same thing," he said. "I'm trying to get away from the outcomes and just hone in on the process. I want to be consistent with my prep and my routine and pregame and stuff like that. Being like that day in and day out, hopefully I can string some stuff together."
Brock Lundquist homered and drove in three runs while Norberto Obeso collected two RBIs and two runs for the Lugnuts.
