Knights Drop Opener to Jumbo Shrimp 2-1
(JACKSONVILLE, FL) -- The Charlotte Knights dropped game one of a six-game series against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp by a score of 2-1 on Tuesday night from 121 Financial Ballpark in Jacksonville, FL. Both teams scored in the first inning and then were held scoreless the rest of the way.
(JACKSONVILLE, FL) -- The Charlotte Knights dropped game one of a six-game series against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp by a score of 2-1 on Tuesday night from 121 Financial Ballpark in Jacksonville, FL. Both teams scored in the first inning and then were held scoreless the rest of the way.
Third baseman Jake Burger started the Charlotte scoring effort in the top of the first inning with a two-out double. First baseman Yermín Mercedes followed with an RBI single to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. It was the only run of the night the Knights would muster against the Jumbo Shrimp.
In the bottom of the first inning, Jacksonville shortstop Bryson Brigman led things off with a single against Charlotte starter Kyle Kubat (2-1, 4.29). Center fielder Monte Harrison then launched a two-run home run to give the Jumbo Shrimp a 2-1 lead. That was all for both teams in the scoring department on Tuesday.
Kubat was saddled with the loss after he started and allowed two runs on four hits over four innings of work. The Knights held the ‘Shrimp scoreless over the final seven innings of the game. RHP Peter Tago (1.0 IP), LHP Jace Fry (1.2 IP) and RHP Kevin McCarthy (1.1 IP) were all sharp on Tuesday out of the Charlotte bullpen. McCarthy was signed by the Chicago White Sox and added to Charlotte’s roster before Tuesday’s game.
Charlotte designated hitter Mikie Mahtook led the way offensively with three hits on the night, while Burger added two hits. Chicago White Sox outfielder Adam Engel went 1-for-4 in the first game of his current MLB rehab assignment with the Knights.
The Knights will continue the six-game series against the Jumbo Shrimp from Jacksonville, FL on Wednesday night. The “Voice of the Charlotte Knights” Matt Swierad will have the call on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte and www.CharlotteKnights.com. First pitch on Wednesday is set for 7:05 p.m.
