(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - The Charlotte Knights began their homestand with a 4-3 loss in 10 innings to the Syracuse Mets on Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark.
In their initial turn at the plate, Knights were able to get the game's first run as Adam Engel led off with a single and Jon Jay followed with an RBI double to deep center field to give Charlotte the early 1-0 lead.
The lead stood for a few innings before Syracuse's Rubén Tejada tied the game with a solo homer in the 4th. The Mets took the lead an inning later on Arismendy Alcantara's RBI ground out, but the Knights got the run back on Seby Zavala's RBI single to score Daniel Palka in the sixth, tying the game 2-2.
Syracuse regained the lead in the seventh on Dilson Herrera's solo home run. After that, the skies above BB&T Ballpark opened up, causing a rain delay of an hour and 14 minutes.
Once play resumed, the Knights quickly tied the game 3-3 on Engel's solo towering 425-foot solo home run to center, his eighth of the season. From there, the game turned into a battle of the bullpens.
Charlotte starter Ross Detwiler threw 7.0 innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits with one walk and four strikeouts to keep the game tied.
Jimmy Cordero entered from the bullpen and pitched 2.0 scoreless innings to keep the game tied. The Syracuse bullpen was able to keep the game tied in the bottom of the ninth as the Knights stranded the winning run on third.
In the top of the 10th, the Mets plated a run off Connor Walsh (L, 1-1) on Luis Guillorme's RBI double, and that would prove to be decisive.
Mets reliever Tim Peterson (W, 2-4) worked around runners on first and third to finish the extra-inning win for the visitors.
Engel went 3-for-5 for the Knights and his home run was Charlotte's 100th of the season. Palka and Zavala also recorded three hits for the Knights in the loss. With his hit in the first inning, Jay has produced a base hit in eight of his nine games for Charlotte.
The Knights and Mets continue their series on Wednesday night. Colton Turner (3-3, 6.10) is scheduled to start for the Knights. Pre-game radio coverage of the 7:04 p.m. game is set for 6:50 p.m. on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte.
