CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Bligh Madris launched his first home run of the season with two outs in the ninth inning, but back-to-back two-run frames weren’t enough to overcome an eight-run deficit as the Indianapolis Indians fell to the Charlotte Knights on Thursday night, 8-4.
After a two-out single by Hoy Park in the top of the ninth, Bligh Madris belted a no-doubter out of the ballpark in right field. The shot was his fifth extra-base hit in 17 games with the Indians (15-16) this season.
Charlotte (14-19) took an early lead when major league rehabber Andrew Vaughn hit a solo home run – his first of two on the night – off Osvaldo Bido (L, 0-2) in the bottom of the first inning. The Knights would keep the lead for the remainder of the ballgame and tack on seven additional runs before the Indians could plate one to put the game out of reach.
Cal Mitchell put the Indians on the board with an RBI single in the top of the eight inning, his second of the night to record his seventh multi-hit game of the season. Oneil Cruz also scored on an error during the play to cut into Charlotte’s lead, 8-2.
Davis Martin (W, 2-0) threw 6.0 shutout innings with three hits allowed, one walk and four strikeouts.
The Indians will look to even the series tomorrow night at 7:04 PM ET. RHP Roansy Contreras (0-0, 0.87) will toe the rubber for the Indians and the Knights will counter with LHP Wes Benjamin (2-0, 3.58).
