PEORIA, IL - The Peoria Chiefs and St. Louis Cardinals have announced that 2017 fourth round draft pick Kramer Robertson from LSU has been assigned to the Chiefs roster. The shortstop is expected to make his professional debut on Friday when the Chiefs play in Cedar Rapids at 6:35 p.m.
Robertson, 22, hit .307 for Louisiana State University this season with 18 doubles, eight homers, three triples and 43 RBI. In 72 games he scored 85 runs, stole nine bases and had more walks (36) than strikeouts (32). He paced the Tigers from the leadoff spot in the lineup with a .403 on-base percentage and an .875 OPS. Robertson helped the Tigers to the SEC West regular season title, the SEC Tournament Championship and a berth in the College World Series Finals which they lost to Florida two games to none. He was named a 2017 Third Team All-American by Collegiate Baseball, an Honorable Mention All-American by Perfect Game/Rawlings and was also a second-team All-SEC selection.
As a junior at LSU in 2016 he hit .324 with 20 doubles, two triples, two homers and 39 RBI. He stole 14 bases and scored 61 runs in 66 games while walking seven times more than he struck out (27 to 20) for a .417 OBP. Robertson led the Tigers in batting average in SEC play at .365 and was named to the Brooks Wallace Watch List as one of the best shortstops in the nation. He was also honored in 2016 with a First Team All-SEC selection, a Baton Rouge Regional All-Team selection and a Second-Team All-American selection by Collegiate Baseball. He was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 32nd round of the 2016 draft but returned to LSU with a mission on helping the team reach Omaha, which they did. Robertson played in 47 games his freshman year and 27 games as a sophomore at LSU with one home run in 2014 and a combined seven doubles as an underclassman.
Prior to attending LSU, Robertson played for Midway High School in Waco, TX which has produced major leaguers Casey Fossum, Tommy Field, Andy Hawkins, and Zach Duke. The infielder hit .425 with five homers his senior season after hitting .438 with six homers as a junior. His best high school season was his sophomore year, where he batted .473 with seven home runs. Robertson garnered 2011 and 2012 District MVP honors while also being named an All-America and All-State selection. He also played quarterback for the football team and point guard for the basketball team.
Robertson's mother, Kim Mulkey, has been the women's basketball coach at Baylor University since 2000 and played point guard at Louisiana Tech. As a player, she won an NCAA Division I tournament championship in 1982, and has won two Division I titles as a head coach (2005, 2012). She also won an Olympic Gold Medal in 1984 with USA Women's Basketball. His father Randy also attended Louisiana Tech and played quarterback for the football team. Finally, his sister, Makenzie, played basketball at Baylor University as well.
