VLADIMIR GUERRERO, JR. & KYLE McGOWIN HONORED AS INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
The International League announced today that Buffalo third baseman Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. and Syracuse right-handed starter Kyle McGowin have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from August 6-12. Guerrero is the third member of the Bisons to claim an IL weekly award this season, joining pitchers Ryan Borucki (June 18-24) and Sean Reid-Foley (July 16-22). McGowin is the second Chiefs player to be so honored in 2018, following Rafael Bautista (April 16-22).
Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. is showing why MLB.com and Baseball America consider him the game's top prospect. In just his second week at the Triple-A level, Guerrero hit .458 and led the International League with four homers and 24 total bases. He went deep in four straight games starting on Wednesday, lighting up the Stripers in consecutive games before doing the same thing to Toledo on Friday and Saturday. Geurrero had four multi-hit games this week including a pair of three-hit efforts, raising his average since joining the Bisons to .395.
19-year-old Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. is in his third season of professional baseball after signing with Toronto as an international free agent in 2015. He is the son of Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2018 member Vladimir Guerrero. Guerrero, Jr. is a native of Montreal, Canada.
Making his third start for the Chiefs since being promoted from Double-A Harrisburg, Kyle McGowin delivered a brilliant performance Tuesday nightto help the Chiefs defeat Charlotte, 2-0. McGowin was perfect through the first five frames and ultimately tossed 8.0 innings of two-hit baseball with just one walk while striking out nine. The Chiefs didn't score until the 6th, but McGowin gave the offense all the time it needed. Reliever Koda Glover closed the door in the 9th to complete the shutout and give McGowin his first victory with the Chiefs since May of 2017.
26-year-old Kyle McGowin is in his sixth season as a professional pitcher. Originally drafted by the Angels, he was traded to the Nationals prior to last season. He has yet to make his Major League debut. McGowin is a native of Southampton, New York.
