GreenJackets Snap Losing Skid with Comeback Victory
*NORTH AUGUSTA, SC: *The Augusta GreenJackets (28-30) ended their three-game losing streak on Saturday night with a 6-3 victory over the Salem Red Sox (28-30).
The Red Sox jumped ahead of the GreenJackets. in the first inning as Eduardo Lopez scored two with an infield single to give Salem a 2-0 lead after an inning.
Augusta would cut that deficit in half in the second as Kadon Morton brought home David McCabe with an infield hit of his own with two outs to make it a 2-1 ballgame.
Peyton Williams entered the game for Augusta to replace starter JR Ritchie in the third and the GreenJackets' reliever played a major role in keeping his team within striking distance as he spun four tremendous innings on the mound giving up just one base runner during his outing while matching his career-high strikeouts with five.
His great work on the mound kept it a 2-1 game into the bottom of the sixth and that's when the GreenJackets made their move to take the lead as Ethan Workinger sent a home run over the left field wall with two outs as his go-ahead blast made it 3-2 Augusta.
In the seventh, the GreenJackets came through with another timely two-out homer as Justin Janas cranked the first home run of his professional career to score three, giving Augusta a comfortable 6-2 advantage.
Salem pulled within three in the eighth on an RBI single by Eddinson Paulino, but Tyler Owens erased any additional threat as he induced a ground-ball double play off the bat of Brainer Bonaci to end the inning with Augusta still ahead 6-3.
Owens would proceed to take care of the side in order in the top of the ninth to close out the victory for Augusta as they went on to defeat the Red Sox 6-3.
Peyton Williams (3-2) earned the victory for his strong contribution out of the bullpen with Tyler Owens (5) picking up the save. Blake Loubier (1-3) took the loss for the Red Sox.
Ethan Workinger and Justin Janas each had two hits on the night to lead the GreenJackets offensively with both hitting home runs. Workinger's homer in the sixth gave Augusta their first lead with Janas' three-run blast in the seventh giving Augusta the insurance they needed to finish off Salem.
The final home game of 2022 for the GreenJackets is on Sunday night as Cedric De Grandpre gets the start for Augusta against Hunter Dobbins for the Red Sox. First pitch of the home finale is set for 6:05 p.m.
