A pinch-hit homer by Greyson Jenista in the ninth inning gave the Mississippi Braves (61-69, 28-33 2nd Half) the lead for good against the Biloxi Shuckers (77-53, 36-24 2nd Half) as the Shuckers fell 3-2 on Friday night at MGM Park. Despite the loss, the Shuckers maintain a two-game lead in the South Division second-half standings.
With the game knotted at two in the top of the ninth inning, RHP Tyler Spurlin (L, 2-2) struck out Alejandro Salazar for the first out in the inning. Jenista came on as a pinch hitter for RHP Josh Graham (W, 3-3) and sliced a solo home run to left, his fifth of the season at Double-A, to put the M-Braves ahead 3-2. RHP Bradley Roney (S, 2) came on for the M-Braves in the ninth and allowed a one-out single to C.J. Hinojosa, but Alexander Alvarez bounced into a double play that ended the game.
Mississippi jumped out to a lead in the first inning. Braden Shewmake singled with two outs off RHP Bowden Francis and Trey Harris followed with a double to left, driving in Shewmake to put the M-Braves in front 1-0. Connor Lien's RBI double in the fourth scored another run for Mississippi, giving the M-Braves a 2-0 advantage. Francis would spin six innings and allow just the two runs on five hits while walking three and striking out nine.
Biloxi strung together a rally in the bottom of the fourth inning. Dillon Thomas opened the inning with a double and moved to third on a double play ball from Jake Gatewood. Bruce Caldwell then worked a walk before Hinojosa lofted a ball to the left-field gap, driving in both runners to bring the game square at 2-2. Biloxi would put a man in scoring position in the fifth and seventh but was unable to push across another run in the contest.
