COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. - Jake Brodt 's RBI single catalyzed a four-run tenth inning, and the Lansing Lugnuts (5-6) came back to beat the West Michigan Whitecaps (5-6), 6-2, on Monday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.

Of the Lugnuts' 41 runs scored in 2019, 29 - 71% - have been scored in the sixth inning or later.

Trailing 2-0 with two outs in the seventh, Jordan Groshans brought in Dom Abbadessa with an infield single to third to break up the shutout. Otto Lopez followed with a game-tying RBI double to right, though Groshans was thrown out at the plate.

After
Will McAffer (Win, 1-0) held the Whitecaps off the scoreboard in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, striking out four, the Lugnuts mounted their biggest rally of the year to date.

After a Lopez walk, his third of the game, put runners at the corners with one out against reliever Yaya Chentouf (Loss, 1-1), Brodt dropped a flare into center field to bring home bonus runner
Alejandro Kirk with the tie-breaking run. Ryan Gold tried squeeze in Lopez, but the play was thwarted, with Lopez tagged out at the plate following a rundown while Brodt took third and Gold advanced to second. Following an intentional walk of Mc Gregory Contreras , Nick Podkul lined an RBI single to right and Dom Abbadessa lasered a two-run single to center field.

Jackson Rees struck out Reece Hampton, Parker Meadows and Johnny Valente in the bottom of the tenth to lock down the victory in the Lugnuts' first extra-inning game of the year.

Nuts starter Josh Winckowski struck out five batters in six innings in a no-decision, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks.

Reggie Pruitt went 3-for-6 with three singles to lead a nine-hit offensive output, raising his batting average from .278 to .310.

Right-hander Joey Murray (6.43) takes on Whitecaps left-hander Kacey Murphy (6.75) at 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday night in the second game of the three-game series at Fifth Third Ballpark.

The next Lansing Lugnuts home game will be this Thursday, opening a six-game, seven-day homestand: a Labatt Blue Thirsty Thursday: The Purge Night! Sometime during the game, a siren will sound - at which point all food and non-alcoholic beverages are free until the inning comes to an end!
