Late Inning Rally Comes Up Short In 9-6 Loss To Matamoscas

Amarillo, Texas — A ninth inning rally by Amarillo came up just shy on Wednesday night at HODGETOWN as the Pointy Boots de Amarillo fell 9-6 to the Matamoscas de Midessa. A two-run bottom of the ninth paired with a bases loaded situation sent the potential game-winning run to the plate for Amarillo. However, a grand slam from Midessa earlier in the game proved too much to overcome this evening.

Scoring Summary: The Matamoscas de Midessa began tonight's scoring with Logan Davidson's first home run of the season to give Midessa a 2-0 lead in the first. The Matamoscas tacked on another run in the top of the second inning to make it 3-0. The Pointy Boots hit consecutive singles to lead off the bottom of the second and had runners on the corners. D-backs' No. 3 rated prospect Geraldo Perdomo drove in their first run of the game on a fielder's choice. Jose Herrera drove in another run to draw Amarillo within one of the lead. The Pointy Boots took their first lead of the game on a Herrera two-run home run onto the lawn in right field in the fourth inning for a 4-3 advantage. The one run advantage would not last long though, as the Matamoscas used a grand slam to regain the lead at 7-4 in the top of the fifth. Amarillo sent the tying runner to the plate in the bottom of the fifth but a ground out ended any real threat for the Pointy Boots to cut into the lead. The Matamoscas added one run in the eighth and ninth innings for a 9-5 lead when Amarillo dug in for their final at bats. Three straight one-out hits highlighted by doubles from Herrera and Jake McCarthy made it 9-5. With two runners in scoring position and one out, a ground out scored another run and drew the Pointy Boots within three runs. Back-to-back two-out walks loaded the bases for Amarillo but a strikeout ended the rally and sent Midessa out as winners.

Soddies Stats: Stone Garrett extended his hit streak to nine games with his first-inning single. Garrett is now 17-for-41 with four home runs, two doubles, and 12 RBI during this streak. Jose Herrera went 3-for-4 with a home run, double, and three RBI to extend his current hit streak to seven games.

Midland Moments: Chase Calabuig switched the momentum of the game in Midessa's favor with his grand slam in the top of the fifth inning. The slam was the first of his career and just the second homer of the year. He also tied his career-high with the four RBI.

Tomorrow's Tidbits: The Sod Poodles and RockHounds will play game three of this six-game series tomorrow night at HODGETOWN. D-backs' No. 23 rated prospect Matt Tabor is expected to make his third Double-A start for the Sod Poodles.

Notes:

Trouble With The Long Ball: Amarillo starter Ryan Weiss gave up multiple home runs in the same game for the third time this season and has given up a long ball in each of his last four starts. The grand slam given up was the first of his career.

Mack Attack: With another 1.2 IP without a run allowed, Amarillo LHP Mack Lemieux extended his current scoreless outing streak to six games. Since being credited with three blown saves in his first four starts and an ERA of 11.25, Lemieux has allowed just two runs in his last nine games.

Multiplied: Luis Alejandro Basabe had his fifth multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Herrera had his fourth mult-RBI performance of the year with his three runs driven in while also adding his second three-hit game of the season.

Chase For The Oil Pan Cup:The chase for the Oil-Pan cup continues in 2021 after the Sod Poodles took the inaugural 2019 season race 17-12. The Oil-Pan Cup is a season-long rivalry between Amarillo and Midland. Currently, the series in 2021 between the squads is all tied up at 4-4 after Midland took game two tonight at HODGETOWN.

Mas Hits: For just the third time this year Amarillo lost a game in which they out hit their opponents. The Pointy Boots tallied 11 hits while Midessa had 10. Amarillo's record when out hitting their opponent falls to 11-3.
