Chattanooga, Tenn. - The Jackson Generals made a late run, but ultimately dropped a 4-2 decision to the Chattanooga Lookouts Monday night at AT&T Field. Chattanooga had just four hits, but four runs over the first two innings was enough for the home team to hand the Generals a third-straight loss.
Jackson (29-28) shut down over the first seven innings by Chattanooga's Stephen Gonsalves and Jake Reed. Gonsalves (1-2, 2.45) picked up the win in his fourth start of the season, striking out eight over five innings. Reed pitched the next two frames before the Generals finally cut into Chattanooga's 4-0 lead.

Rudy Flores opened up the eighth with a double to right-center off, and Kevin Cron followed with a walk. With two on, Dawel Lugo scored both with a triple smashed the other way to cut the deficit to two. That was all Jackson would get, unfortunately. Victor Reyes struck out before Lugo was cut down at the plate on an Oscar Hernández ground ball.
After a Kelly Dugan walk, Chattanooga (32-25) turned the game over to closer John Curtiss. With the tying runs on base, he struck out Travis Denker to end the threat. Curtiss (S, 11) retied the side in order in the ninth en route to his 11th save in as many opportunities. The righty has not allowed a run yet this season.
The Generals fell behind early, giving up four runs over the first two innings. Gabe Speier (2-3, 4.76) could not get out of the first inning in his first start of the season. After a single and two walks loaded the bases, Ryan Strausborger hit a bouncer to third. Dawel Lugo's throw to first got away, allowing two runs to score. Dan Gamache followed with a sacrifice fly to put Chattanooga up 3-0.
Brooks Hall performed admirably in relief, giving up just a run in 5.1 innings. Nick Gordon's RBI double in the second made it 4-0, but that was it for Chattanooga against Hall. The righty retired the final 12 men he faced. Alex Young pitched out of the bullpen for the first time, going two scoreless innings.
As a staff. Jackson allowed just four hits in the loss. Chattanooga was without a hit after the third inning on Monday. Despite that, the Generals lost their third in a row for a third time this season. Jackson is now three games out of first in the North Division with 13 games to play in the First Half.
Game three of the series between the Generals and Lookouts is Tuesday night at AT&T Field. Joel Payamps (0-1, 6.55) takes the hill for Jackson against southpaw Matt Tracy (3-4, 3.98).
