LMB: Jorge Bauzá imparte cátedra a los umpires de la Liga Mexicana de Beisbol

“En comparación con la primera vez que vine a platicar con ellos —dijo Jorge Bauzá—, puedo asegurar que hemos alcanzado un nivel de profesionalismo más alto. Hay mucho compromiso y dedicación”.
Amanece en las instalaciones de la Academia de El Carmen, Nuevo León. El esfuerzo físico borra la palabra “frío”. Bajo la supervisión de Luis Alberto Ramírez, Director de Umpires de la LMB; y de Salvador Viera, Instructor de Umpires de la LMB, termina el primer entrenamiento del día y el grupo se reúne al pie del Cerro del Fraile. Listos para recibir los consejos de una persona cuya sabiduría contribuyó a que varios umpires llegaran a la Gran Carpa.
“El logro es de ellos —comentó Bauzá—, pero yo comparto la satisfacción de haberlos ayudado a que lograran su sueño”.
Su trabajo se ve reflejado actualmente en el mejor beisbol del mundo, en la figura de cuatro umpires latinos que fueron instruidos por él: los venezolanos Manuel González, Carlos Torres y Edwin Moscoso; y el dominicano Ramón de Jesús.
Jorge Bauzá nació en Puerto Rico. Durante nueve años fue umpire en Ligas Menores de Estados Unidos. Además, impartió justicia en el beisbol invernal en la Isla del Encanto y en Series del Caribe. Se unió al Sistema de Desarrollo de Umpires de Ligas Menores en 2002 y desde 2021 trabaja para Major League Baseball.

“Los umpires de la Liga Mexicana de Beisbol se distinguen de entre todos los demás por el interés y la dedicación que le dedican a mejorar. Tienen una gran actitud. Muchos de ellos trabajan en verano y en invierno, eso es agotador, por lo que su acondicionamiento físico es especial, necesitan durabilidad, se tienen que adaptar para estar al máximo nivel todo el año”.
Con voz firme, Jorge Bauzá evalúa a los umpires de la LMB, les corrige sus posturas, movimientos, posición de las piernas, de los brazos, se enfoca en detalles que para cualquier otra persona pasarían desapercibidos, pero que para un umpire son trascendentales.
En esta ocasión su trabajo en México también consistió en revisar las reglas modificadas recientemente. Entre ellas, las relacionadas con los cronómetros en el campo: doce segundos entre lanzamientos sin corredores en base, treinta segundos para las visitas de coaches o managers al montículo y dos minutos para el cambio de lanzadores y de pausa entre innings.
“Estoy muy agradecido con la Liga Mexicana de Beisbol —dijo Bauzá—. Es un circuito al que le tengo mucho cariño y aprecio. Son muchos años de venir acá a Nuevo León. Siempre con el objetivo de ayudar, de contribuir con mis conocimientos y mi experiencia”.
La pretemporada de umpires en la Academia de El Carmen se extenderá hasta el 16 de abril. Un día después se dividirán en diez cuarteras que a lo largo de la República Mexicana, y con los consejos de Jorge Bauzá en mente, serán la ley sobre el terreno de juego en la temporada 2023 de la LMB que arranca el 20 de abril en León.
