Terminó el rol regular con marca de 9-1 y efectividad de 2.38 en 27 apariciones, una apertura. En 53.0 entradas de labor sólo admitió 14 carreras limpias y 37 imparables, otorgó 15 bases por bolas y recetó 71 chocolates.
Luis Márquez irrumpió en el bullpen jarocho en 2021 con 11 salidas, pero fue en 2022 cuando se consolidó como un estelar del beisbol mexicano. Su llegada al equipo fue gracias a la recomendación de Alejandro Soto, veterano de 15 campañas en la LMB.
“Alejandro Soto y Luis Márquez son de Huatabampo, Sonora —comentó Jesús Valdez, Directo Deportivo de El Águila de Veracruz—. Soto llegó a su pueblo y se puso a manejar en la liga ejidal. Y fue justo ahí donde vio lanzar a Luis Márquez y se acercó a mí para decirme “llévese a un muchacho de aquí del pueblo. No lanza duro, pero tiene un cambio de velocidad sobresaliente”. Alejandro Soto es un veterano, pelotero reconocido y le dije “Alex, no necesito escuchar más, envíalo”. Y así fue como Luis Márquez llegó a El Águila de Veracruz”.
Márquez, de apenas 24 años de edad, salía del bullpen al ritmo de La Boda del Huitlacoche, apagaba el fuego y le daba la oportunidad a su equipo de remontar en la pizarra. Fue en ese rol de relevista en el que brilló en el staff de pitcheo de El Águila de Veracruz y en el que se agenció nueve victorias, para liderar el circuito junto a Wilmer Ríos, de los Acereros de Monclova.
“Luis Márquez llegó a Veracruz sin experiencia en el beisbol profesional, ni academias ni nada, simplemente el rancho —dijo Jesús Valdez.
Márquez se une al selecto club de peloteros de El Águila de Veracruz que han ganado la distinción al Novato del Año, que ahora incluye a Jaime Abad (1952), Román Ramos (1955), Ramón Arano (1959), Pablo Montes de Oca (1961), Santiago González (2004), Japhet Amador (2009) y Luis Márquez (2022).
El Comité Elector de las Nominaciones Especiales, conformado por periodistas y miembros de los 18 clubes, declaró ganador a Luis Márquez con un total de 49 votos. Le siguieron Fernando Villegas (13), Juan Uriarte (4), Cristian Alvarado (3), Nico Tellache (3), Ricardo Chapa (2), Armando Aguilar (1) y Samuel Alvarado (1).
“Su recta sólo llega a las 86 millas por hora —comenta Valdez—. Su mecánica descontrola a los bateadores rivales, pero su lanzamiento estelar es el cambio de velocidad. Ese cambio es la clave para el éxito que está teniendo".
Siete de los nueve triunfos de Márquez en 2022 fueron como relevista y jugando en gira, donde tuvo un récord de siete ganados y sólo una derrota.
“El plan siempre fue que él viniera después de que el abridor lanzara tres o cuatro entradas —confesó Jesús Valdez—. No lo usamos como pitcher abridor porque un abridor necesita una recta poderosa y Luis no cuenta con ella. No podemos exponerlo a que un bateador lo vea en un mismo juego en tres turnos. Uno o dos turnos y él va a seguir desbalanceando a los rivales. Ya a la tercera lo pueden medir. Por eso los planes de El Águila para 2023 es seguir utilizando a Luis Márquez como relevo largo o para situaciones importantes”.
