Loons Achieve Single-Season Stolen Base Record in 2-1 Loss

Midland, Mich. – The Great Lakes Loons (72-50) (27-30) dropped their 18th one-run game of the season, their fourth to the Dayton Dragons (62-61) (29-28) 2-1 on a 72-degree clear Thursday night at Dow Diamond.

The Loons came in one stolen base shy of matching the franchise record. Taylor Young led off the game with a walk, then stole second base for his 53rd of the season. Young is now tied for second all-time with James Baldwin III with 53, Baldwin III did it in 2012.

Dee-Strange Gordon has the most in Great Lakes history, 73 in 2009. Young was plated by a Yeiner Fernandez sacrifice fly.

Yeiner Fernandez led off the sixth with a base on balls. He had three stolen bases in his prior 93 games. The 20-year-old got a read off Jayvien Sandridge and took second base to make it 190 on the season. Chris Alleyne added his 23rd swipe of the season, as a pinch-runner in the seventh. He was stranded, one of eight on the night for the Loons.

Dayton’s two runs came via the long ball. Edwin Arroyo aired a 2-2 two-out pitch over the left-field fence to tie the game in the third. Ruben Ibarra put the Dragons ahead smacking the first pitch he saw from Lucas Wepf in the sixth.

Justin Wrobleski went four innings, striking out five. The Dodgers No. 20 prospect now has 107 punchouts in 99.1 innings.

In the last three innings, Carlos De Los Santos and Jack Dreyer struck out six Dayton batters. In five of the final nine outs, Loons' hitters went down on strikes. Great Lakes finished the month of August with a 12-14 record, their only losing month of 2023.

With a 2-1 series lead, game four is tomorrow Friday, September 1st. The first pitch is at 7:05 p.m. Friday is a Feast Friday presented by Isabella Bank and The Nine Night where the Loons and Minor League Baseball celebrate the historic impact of Black baseball pioneers.
