Loons Rock Lugnuts 12-4, Win Series and Third Straight Game

LANSING, Mich. –The Great Lakes Loons (6-3) were victorious in their third straight game behind their third consecutive five-inning start and third eight-run plus performance in a row. Today, a 12-4 scoring stampede on a 73-degree sunny Sunday afternoon at Jackson ® Field.

Dylan Campbell was the leader in the clubhouse with four hits, the first Loon with a four-hit game in 2024. In the eighth inning, he cleared the bases loaded with a double, homered off Lugnuts starter Blaze Pontes in the third, and singled twice, stealing third base in the seventh and coming home on a fielder's choice.

Great Lakes scored in five of the nine innings, their best a four-run fourth inning. Alex Freeland doubled home Nelson Quiroz, who led off the inning with a single. Kyle Nevin next up hit a single to right field that plated Freeland, and then Chris Newell took a two-out two-strike pitch yard to deep right field. Newell has nine RBI in the last three games and two home runs.

The Loons were up 8-0 after four innings. Only two Lunguts reached base at that point.

Christian Romero started and struck out four. Only permitting two baserunners, both walks, the second in the fourth inning, erased in the next at-bat a 4-6-3 double play. The 21-year-old right-hander worked around a hit, walk, and error in the fifth inning, with just a run, unearned coming across. It was Romero’s first five-inning start and third consecutive by a Loon.

Four Great Lakes relievers replicated Romero through the last five innings with one hit and four strikeouts. Jonathan Edwards threw a scoreless sixth. A dropped third strike and three walks aided a run for Lansing in the seventh, two more off an infield single against Livan Reinoso. Kelvin Ramirez closed the door and worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth.

Lucas Wepf, in the ninth, extended his scoreless inning streak to six, securing the sixth win and series win for the Loons.

Rounding Things Out

Romero, Jared Karros, and Peter Heubeck each went five innings in their latest starts. The last time three straight games saw the Loons starter complete five innings was September 4-7, 2022. Those three pitchers were Kendall Williams, Carlos Duran, and Adolfo Ramirez.
