Clinton, IA (July 11, 2018) - The Clinton LumberKings ran their season long losing streak to seven games, failing to score a run in a 1-0 loss to the Great Lakes Loons on Wednesday night at Ashford University Field. LumberKings (9-10, 48-41) pitching combined to strike out 15 batters over the 10 innings but failed to score a run in their fifth shutout loss of the season.
Scott Boches started for Clinton and turned in his best start of the season and his professional career. Over his five innings of work he allowed no runs on just two hits while walking none and striking out five. For his time out Boches was given a no decision.
The Loons (4-16, 28-60) tallied just four hits on the night, all singles, with both of their hits against Boches coming in the third inning. Oliver Jaskie made his first relief appearance of the season for Clinton and continued the theme of dominant pitching with two shutout innings of relief in which he did not allow a hit or walk and struck out three.
Great Lakes starter Edwin Uceta was equally impressive over his six shutout innings of work. He allowed four hits while walking one and struck out seven but was given a no decision for his work.
The LumberKings outhit the Loons 6-4 but only once collected more than one hit in the same inning. Eugene Helder was the only LumberKing to have multi-hit game going 2-for-4 at the plate.
The Loons broke the scoreless tie in the top of the tenth inning against LumberKings reliever Marvin Gorgas. Luke Heyer was assigned to second to start the inning, as per Minor League Baseball extra inning rules, and did not move after the first two batters of the inning were retired by way of the strikeout. Gorgas (3-2) then issued an intentional walk to Hunter Feduccia after falling behind 3-0 and Josh McLain drove home what proved to be the winning run with an RBI single to center.
In the bottom of the 10th, the LumberKings could only get their free base runner to third against Loons reliever Jasiel Alvino. In his second inning of work, Alvino (1-0) stranded the tying run at third when Juan Camacho grounded out to short for the LumberKings seventh consecutive loss.
