Luis Frias started the game for the Hillsboro Hops and was his magnificent self once again. Frias' night included six innings of one run ball, scattering four hits, and punching six tickets on the night. The tall right hander opposed Vancouver, Washington's own Damon Casetta-Stubbs. Vancouver, Washington is 22 miles away from Ron Tonkin Field. Casetta-Stubbs put together a solid performance as well tonight, going four innings allowing two runs while striking out three.
Hillsboro drew first blood in the bottom of the third inning. The Hops loaded the bases and Steven Leyton hit a long sacrifice fly to left, driving in Joe Gillette. Third baseman Tristin English kept the line moving as he singled to left driving in Lyle Lin. At the completion of the first third of the game, the Hops held a 2-0 advantage.
Everett cut the deficit in half in the top of the fifth inning, when Deaires Moses singled to right field driving in Luis Joseph and brought the score to 2-1 Hops.
In the bottom half of the sixth the Hops put up some much needed runs. First baseman Andy Yerzy reached on an infield single and then Hillsboro's seven hole hitter Gillette blasted a baseball onto the Frontier Family Berm in left field to put the Hops up 4-1 heading into the seventh inning.
Xavier University's Connor Grammes entered in relief of Luis Frias in the top half of the seventh inning. Joseph had an unfriendly welcome for Grammes as he tripled to right field, scoring Miguel Perez all the way from first. Grammes' night came to an abrupt end after walking two hitters and surrendering a triple.
Bryan Menendez took over in the jam with runners on the corners with one out. Cesar Izturis Jr lifted a ball to left feel that was just deep enough to score Joseph from third base and advance Moses to second base. Menedez escaped any further damage with a big strikeout to end the frame.
Hillsboro skipper Javier Colina made the call to Eduardo Hererra for the four out save in the top half of the eighth inning after Everett put runners on the corners. Hererra came in and froze Miguel Perez with a nasty curveball.
Everett put the tying run aboard in the top half of the ninth via the walk with one out. Izturis punched out and the Hops almost competed the strike-em-out-throw-em-out double play to end it, but Moses just got his hand in. Hererra was put to the test in a high leverage situation, tying run in scoring position, up one run, and he did his job. Hops catcher Nick Dalesandro HOSED Moses at third base to put the exclamation point on the win for the Hops.
The Hops return tomorrow night seeking the series win against these same Everett Aquasox. Catch all the action on Rip City Radio 620 AM beginning with the pregame show at 6:35 pm and first pitch at 7:05 pm. Once again, the first pitch is at 7:05pm.
