CLINTON, IA (July 27, 2017) - The Clinton LumberKings, in their first doubleheader of the season, split with the Quad Cities River Bandits, taking game one 4-3, and falling 6-1 in game two on Thursday night at Ashford University Field.
The LuumberKings (13-20, 44-56) held on for the win in game one. Scoring a pair of runs in the second and third innings. Jhombeyker Morales doubled home the first run of the game and was followed five pitches later by a Johnny Slater RBI sacrifice fly to shallow center.
In the bottom of the third inning, of game one, Gareth Morgan capped the offense for Clinton with a two-run single.
Ljay Newsome started for Clinton and took the win for five innings of work in which he allowed three runs, all scoring on a Carmen Benedetti home run in the top of the fifth inning. The win was Newsome's (6-8) second straight and his second of the year against the River Bandits (21-12, 58-43).
Carson LaRue (10-4) took the loss in game one for an abbreviated three inning outing in which he allowed two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out three.
Game two looked to be pitcher's duel through the first six innings. Steven Moyers started for the LumberKings, just his second of the year, and turned in five strong innings in which he held Quad Cities to an Abraham Toro-Hernandez third inning solo home run. The long fly was Hernandez first of the year, but would be the only run allowed by Moyers.
The LumberKings finally broke through against Abdeil Saldana in the bottom of the sixth inning. Bryson Brigman and Joe Rizzo led-off with singles that put runners at first and third. Yojhan Quevedo then lined a ball to right that brought home Brigman on a sacrifice fly that tied the game at one.
The game was decided in the top of the seventh inning when the River Bandits batted around to score five runs. Michael Koval was charged with all of the River Bandits runs in the innings and was hung with the loss. The first runs of the inning that scored for Quad Cities came when Ronnie Dawson lined a two-run single to center off Koval (2-6) that put the River Bandits on top for good.
Salvador Montano (3-2) earned the win for Quad Cities with 1.1 innings of relief work.
