Cedar Rapids, IA (July 27, 2018) - For just the second time this season the Clinton LumberKings were walked off, falling to the Cedar Rapids Kernels 3-2 in 10 innings. Following a ninth inning comeback, the LumberKings (17-16, 56-47) failed to record an out in the 10th as their losing streak reached four games.
Ray Kerr started for Clinton and was sharp in a seven-inning outing in which he allowed two runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out five.
The LumberKings scored the game's first run, taking a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Onil Pena doubled with two out in the frame and scored two pitches later on a Dimas Ojeda single through the left side of the infield.
Cedar Rapids (25-9, 57-46) answered the run in the bottom of the second. Following a two out walk to Jacob Pearson, and stolen base moving him to second, Jared Akins singled to center to tie the game at one.
The Kernels took their first lead of the night in the bottom of the sixth. Akill Baddoo singled to open the inning and moved to third on a double by Ryan Jeffers. Robby Rinn lifted a sacrifice fly to center to plate Baddoo putting the Kernels on top 2-1.
The run looked as though it might hold up until the LumberKings rallied in the top of the ninth. Ryan Costello singled up the middle to open the inning and Keegan McGovern doubled down the line in left to put runners at second and third. Calvin Faucher then came on in relief for the Kernels and allowed the game's tying run to score on an RBI ground out from Pena.
Still the LumberKings would get no more to show for their ninth inning and turned things over to Sam Delaplane in the 10th after Faucher (4-3) had held Clinton scoreless in the top of the inning.
Delaplane (4-1) failed to record an out in the 10th and picked up his first loss of the season. A free base runner, as per Minor League Baseball's extra inning rules, an error and walk loaded the bases for Ryan Jeffers who drew the game winning walk.
The loss is the LumberKings fourth straight and marks the first time they have been swept in a three games series in Cedar Rapids since May of 2013.
The LumberKings will now head home to Ashford University Field for a four-game series and homestand with the Peoria Chiefs starting on Saturday night. Clinton will throw right-hander Scott Boches (2-2, 2.84) while the Chiefs will tap righty Alex Fagalde (5-3, 1.79). Game time is slated for 6:30 PM (CDT).
