MONTGOMERY, AL - The Mississippi Braves (29-37) scored four runs in the ninth to complete a two-run comeback in a 5-2 win over the Montgomery Biscuits (25-34) on Thursday night at Riverwalk Stadium.
The M-Braves pulled off their third ninth inning or later comeback at Riverwalk Stadium this season.
Justin Dean and Andrew Moritz each collected three hits in the win and came up clutch in the ninth.
The M-Braves trailed 2-1 entering the ninth inning. Cody Milligan walked with one out and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Dean drilled a triple off the top of the railing in right field to tie the game at 2-2. After two walks, Moritz landed a two-run single in front of centerfielder Kameron Misner to give the M-Braves their first lead of the game at 4-2. Jalen Miller scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 5-2.
Dean went 3-for-5 with a triple, a double and an RBI. Atlanta’s No. 30 prospect has hits in eight of the last nine games. He is hitting .306 with five extra-base hits and 10 RBI in 17 games in June.
Moritz went 3-for-5 with two RBI to extend his hit streak to seven games. He is 9-for-27 with four RBI over the streak. When Moritz came up in the ninth, he had made the final out in two previous bases loaded opportunities, but he came through when it mattered most.
The M-Braves missed out on some chances early in the game.
In the first, Milligan and CJ Alexander each singled and Drew Lugbauer walked to load the bases. However, a Miller pop out and Moritz strikeout retired the side.
In the third, the M-Braves again loaded the bases, but Moritz grounded out to the third baseman Curtis Mead to end the threat. The Biscuits scored a run in the first and another in the second to take a 2-0 lead.
RHP Alan Rangel settled down after the first two innings, retiring nine of the last 10 batters he faced to get through five innings allowing two runs with five strikeouts.
Atlanta’s No. 22 prospect holds a 4.95 ERA with 74 strikeouts in 56 1/3 innings.
Neither team scored from the third through seventh innings.
The M-Braves finally broke through in the eighth. After an infield single by Moritz, infielder Yariel Gonzalez clubbed a double off the top of the wall in right field to score Moritz from first base and make it 2-1.
Gonzalez is batting .226 with seven homers and 21 RBI on the season.
The four runs in the ninth made it 5-2, and LHP Jake Higginbotham sealed the game by forcing a double play groundout for his second save of the season.
M-Braves pitchers retired 20 of 23 to close the game.
The fourth game of the series is on Friday at Riverwalk Stadium. RHP Freddy Tarnok (1-2, 5.21) makes the start for Mississippi against RHP Taj Bradley (2-1, 2.03) for Montgomery. The first pitch is at 6:35 pm CT, with coverage starting at 6:20 pm CT on 103.9 WYAB, TuneIn Radio, First Pitch App, and MiLB.tv.
