GREENVILLE, S.C. - The New York Yankees have announced that third baseman
A 22-year-old out of Miami, Fla., Alvarez returns with the RiverDogs for a second stint after a rapid rise through the minor leagues in his first pro season a year ago that ended in a playoff run in Charleston. The 6'1" slugger got off to a roaring start in the Yankees system, reaching safely in his first 25 games as a professional, including a 22-game hitting streak (10 with Staten Island, 12 with the RiverDogs). Overall, he slashed .288/.306/.404 with five homers and 40 RBI in 66 games.
The 17th round pick by the Yankees in 2016 was hitting .228 (34-for-149) in 41 games with Tampa to start the season prior to his reassignment to Charleston.
Alvarez fills in the spot on the roster vacated by right-hander Nick Nelson who was placed on the seven-day disabled list on Friday, a move retroactive to Thursday, June 1.
An alum of Killian High School in Miami, Alvarez bounced around between three different schools in his four collegiate seasons, first playing for Florida International and Miami Dade Community College. Alvarez spent his final two seasons at Eastern Kentucky where he compiled back-to-back double-digit home run seasons with the Colonels.
The native Floridian turned heads his senior year, posting career bests in average (.409), on-base percentage (.455), slugging (.646), and home runs (13) and was named the 2016 Ohio Valley Conference Co-Player of the Year. Alvarez collected more hits than any other player in Division I baseball in 2016 (97) and was named a semifinalist for the Gregg Olson Award, given to the NCAA breakout player of the year.
With their retooled roster, the RiverDogs will try to salvage a series split with the Drive on Sunday afternoon at 4:05pm from Fluor Field. Charleston will send RHP Jio Orozco (2-3, 5.83) as Greenville counters with LHP Logan Boyd (7-1, 3.17). The RiverDogs return home for a brief three-game homestand against Asheville starting on Tuesday at The Joe.
